 JD 4600 Cruise Problems

I have a new JD 4600 and have a problem with the cruise control. Sometimes it engages and sometimes it is very difficult to engage. Has anyone else seen this problem and/or have a method to reliably engage?

 JD 4600 Cruise Problems

Joe, I don't know about the 4600 but on the 4100 you can engage the cruise by pressing down on the forward hydro pedal and pulling up on the cruise lever. Then let up on the hydro pedal while still holding the cruise lever. It should stay locked until you touch the hydro pedal or brake on the right side. Hope this helps.

 JD 4600 Cruise Problems

Joe: If the cruise control on the 4600 is anything like the cruise control on the 4400 (i.e. an electromagnet, controlled by a rocker switch on the instrument panel, which when actuated holds the forward hydrostatic pedal in place), well ... I may have had a similar problem. I had no cruise control when the pedal was less than half way depressed and only sometime cruise control when the pedal was more than half way depressed. Even when the cruise control "seemed" to be working for a while, sooner or later the hydrostatic pedal would just pop up into the neutral position, for no apparent reason. I discovered that the forward hydrostatic pedal had been slightly bent (during shipment?) such that when the pedal was depressed less than half way, the metal plate on the pedal was too far away from the electromagnet to be held by it; and when the pedal was depressed more than half way, although the electromagnet and the metal plate of the pedal finally did make contact, they did so at an angle, the pedal was not held firmly, and engine vibrations would cause the pedal to slip a little bit at a time until it got to the point of "popping out" of cruise control again. Since I'm about 30 miles from the dealer and didn't want the tractor gone for a day or two for what seemed to be something easy to fix, I called the dealer, told him the problem, and how I planned to fix it (i.e. just try and bend the pedal back into proper alignment with the electromagnet.) He agreed that if that didn't work, he would cover any repair under warranty. [I assumed he was just going to get his mechanic to try and bend the pedal back into the proper alignment (not replace it), so why not have me do it? I also assumed that since it's my tractor, I would be much more careful when bending anything than his mechanic would be.] 30 seconds of careful bending and the cruise control has worked perfectly ever since. So ... check the alignment of the forward hydrostatic pedal and the electromagnet. And if you need to bend anything, make sure the dealer will cover you under warranty! Hope your problem is as simple as mine was.
