I have a 790, just got it a week ago. If you get the MFWD option it will have a contineous live PTO, the 2WD model does not. The 790 has a two stage clutch, press it half way down (you can feel half way because the second half is a harder push) and the motion of the tractor will stop if you are in gear, not the PTO if it is engaged. The second half controls the PTO. So, you can have an implement running off the PTO and stop the tractor, change directions or what ever and the imlement will keep running. On the 2WD model the PTO is transmition driven, meaning if you step on the clutch the tractor motion and the PTO will stop. In any case, the PTO does not reverse if the tractor is in reverse, they always turn one direction. The 4000 series have a better setup (also more $$$$), I believe they have a seperat PTO clutch which is activated by a lever, and does not require the use of the foot clucth to engage or disengage it. 4000 owners can confirm or correct this statement.
The 790 is quite a work horse, you will not find a gear driven tractor rated at 30 hp gross with a live PTO for the price, that is why I bought one, and so far so good. I have been using a 60" tiller and a 72" finishing mower, with power to spare.

I pretty much agree with Kevin except I was told by a JD dealer that the JD790 2WD without power steering has a transmission driven PTO but the 2WD with power steering comes with a 2 stage clutch live PTO. He said the 4WD comes standard with power steering and a 2 stage clutch live PTO. With the 2 stage clutch, you can push the clutch in half way and the tractor will stop, even though the PTO is still running. This allows you to stop quickly if need be, and you can change gears, switch to reverse, etc, while the PTO is still running. If you push the clutch in all the way the PTO will stop (once the momentum of the implement dies down). There was only a few hundred dollars difference between the 2WD with live PTO and the 4WD, so I didn't even consider a 2WD. It's easy to tell if it has the live PTO because there's a very noticable difference in how hard you to have to push the clutch for the PTO. What I did was test drive one with the PTO lever engaged and practiced pushing the clutch part way down and shifting gears while the PTO is still running. I ended up not buying one, but not because I didn't like it. The New Holland dealer was much better to deal with than any of the JD dealers I went to (I went to 3 in my area). JD dealers seem to think that just because a tractor is green and yellow and says John Deere on the side they can treat potential customers as if they don't care whether the person buys a tractor from them or not. Just for the record, I really like my TC29D!
