How should a small diesel sound?

I looked at two used JD1070's side by side. JD1070's have a four cyl 38.5 HP engine. The engine with 240 hrs. had that distinctive sharp knock as it idled away not much different than my JD750. The other 1070 with 460 hours sound much more muffled, without the hard rap and quieter. Can you determine anything by the sound of the engine as I have explained or is this just subjective nonsense? Both machines were comercial rentals during there short first lives. I chose the low hr machine with the sharper sound. Any comments?

How should a small diesel sound?

Eric, I bought a 1070 with 1020hrs. on it and it still had that sharp sound that you refer to. I have since put on 50 more hrs.using it only on weekends and I am very satisfied with the perfomance. All the power I need with great manoeuvrability and I sure love that MFWD.
DAVE!!

Dave, Is the transmission on your 1070 collar shift or sync shift or are they one and the same. I drove this machine just around the parking lot but the 3 range shifter seems kind of clunky feeling, the seller told me that within a range you could shift at will without stopping. Not familiar with the tractor I couldn't really shift fast enough to see if this worked well or not. Seems like a solid tractor though. The sheet metal and paint aren't as good as on my old JD750 however. The 1070 is a 1998 and already shows signs of rust bubbles in the fender seems. If you do loader work let me know what you think of the shift mechanics.

How should a small diesel sound?

I almost forgot, It would be nice to know from a diesel mechanic what type of sound is ideal. Sharp rap or not

Eric your request is unusual as every engine does have a unique sound to it. The only thing is what is sharp? What you should do is ask to have the tractor dynoed. Injectors will give you the difference in engine noise that I believe you are refering to. There are other things that might also enter into this sound difference valve settings or timing of the injection pump and more.

How should a small diesel sound?

Art, thanks for the reply. I knew the question was a little different but I was/am trying to decide which machine to buy and I don't know that much about diesels. Side by side there was an unmistakable difference in sound so I thought there might be something to it. A dyno test is a great idea. After all where talking about a lot of money. And there is no warranty with this tractor. To arrange to haul it somewhere to be tested and then hauled back to his lot would be a bit much, don't you think. Probably a good way to tick him off. Not to mention, he's 3 hrs away. After all the engine is a 1997 with only 240 hrs. Buying used can be tough on your nerves.
