 Should I get a John Deere 2520?

I'm considering getting a 2520 but I'm not sure it will do all I want it to. My main uses will be mowing 4-5 acres, tilling 2-3 acres, and loader work. The main thing I'm concerned about is tillage. After I plant would a 2520 be able to pull a 1-2 row cultivator or would that be working it too hard? Or should I go with something bigger if I'm concerned about more field work?

Vern, I guess it all depends on how much time you have, a pickup truck will haul just as much as a semi, it just takes more trips. With the current needs you describe the 2520 would handle things but not in a hurry. I'd suggest going to a 3000 series not only for more horsepower, but also a heavier by 900 lbs. tractor with a bigger frame. You will likely have a front end loader before you know it and be using it lots more than you ever thought. I don't know the cost difference, but buying bigger now will cost less than trading up later. Enjoy your day. Frank.

Vernorz,

When looking to buy a compact tractor, it is always best to go with the biggest tractor you can get by with. Far too many people purchase a smaller tractor, due to the price savings, only to discover that they wish they had purchased a tractor one or two sizes bigger.

This is not always the case, however. There are times when a smaller tractor would be better for cleaning out cattle pens, or feed lots. Smaller tractors are easier to handle, when mowing. Since they weigh less, they don't compact the sod nearly as much, either.

Big dogs need a lot of room to roam. If you've got the space to work with, it's better to get a slightly larger tractor, as well.

I'm with Frank. Move up a size or two. If you're looking at a 5 foot tiller, I'd go no smaller than 30 horses at the PTO shaft. Figure on 5 or 6 PTO horses per foot of tiller......and make sure you get a slip-clutch for that tiller.

Joel

The 2520 will only really handle the 55 inch johndeere tiller not really a 5 fter tiller. You could use a 5ft if you went slow and didn't push her. Its only a 26.5hp tractor so your pto hp is much less than the rated hp. It will do everything you want but till fast. I have 72 inch mid mower and mow 5 acres with it and its nice. I have the 61 inch bucket and will pick up anything i put into it. You could use the 48" or the 55" tiller and be ok. I use the quick attach 3pt thing all the time, its great from ballast box to moving wood with 3pt pallet forks to moving the log splitter all from your seat.
