3 pt hitch rubbing on R4 tires

To all JD4100 owners: I have this tractor with the industrial (R4) tires and wheels. It seems like the hitch's lower link arms when raised are awfully close to the tires, and sometimes rubs on the tires. It seems that no matter how I adjust the link arms, they either rub or are awfully close to the tires when raised with an implement. Can the rear R4 wheels be reversed to give more clearance. I know that this can be done with the ag wheels, but not sure it can be done with the R4 wheels. Anybody else experianced this problem?

Looking at the JD4100 manual the answer is no. The answer is also no for the turf tires. I reversed the turf rims and gained about 5" and I suspect you can do the same for R4's. The extra tire width has not been a problem with the mid mount mower. Before I reversed the turfs the 3 pt. arms were able to rub on the tires if the sway bars were set too wide.

Yes, your rear wheels can/need to be reversed. Because R4s are directional, you need to put the left one on the right side and the right one on the left side. Make note of the direction of the tread before you remove the wheels so you can see how they need to be put on after you switch them. If done correctly, the valve stems will now be on the inside of the rear wheels. You might also check to see if the front wheels can/need to be switched. If so, switch them just like you did the rears - with valve stems on the inside. Steve

Jim,
Having bought our 4100 w/R4's, I can tell you they "definitely" are swappable. you will only gain about 3" (1 1/2 on each side)...Assuming I measured correctly, but that may be all you need to avoid this problem. I have since swapped them for turfs. I have measured the rims for offset, and it seems likely that they too can be reversed. But have also heard that wheel weights will no longer fit. I cannot recall entirely, but Larry may be right in that the manual does not reflect this..

Thanks for the info everyone. If I can get 1 1/2 inches more clearance, this will solve my problem. I'll try it out.

Another ? Would it be adviseable to also swap the fronts as one post suggested, when I swap the rear wheels? Has anyone done this?

Had the same problem, I used spacers on the implement to hold the arms closer to the implement.
