I am trying to see how to check the Hyd oil on the 4210 w/ backhoe? The sight glass is impossible to see.
Am I missing something??
Any help is most appreciated.
Dave

There will be a dip stick somewhere around/under the seat. It might be on the fill port cap. ....

The cap on mine is just a cap...not a dipstick.
On the 4210, is it supposed to be a dipstick/cap?

I don't have that model.... I better let someone who does answer.

I found a 4210 Manual online and it only mentions the sight glass.... apparently no dip stick on this model??? ....

The 4310 is basically the same. The cap doesn't have a dipstick and I always use the sight glass. ....

It is next to impossible to see the sight glass with the hoe installed.

If it was good when you put the hoe on and do not have any leaks or purge something it still should be good.

However you can check it with a mirror and a small light. ....

Thanks for the confirmation on the "non-dip-stick" cap.
This issue really is an oversight.
You'd think that JD would have addressed this issue by allowing "sight-holes" on the backhoe frame so that you could see the sight-glass with ease.
I'd be curious to see if they have modified things in new models.

Funny enough: JD recommends checking Hyd Oil daily; not overfilling with oil; and not running while system is low, yet they make it pretty damned hard to check the oil with something mounted on the back!

Thanks again.

I have a 4310 with the 47 hoe. There is a hole strategically placed in the backhoe frame that, if you shine a flashlight through it at the proper angle, you can see the sight glass. I use this method all the time since I rarely remove the backhoe. I need a flashlight if I am in the garage, no flashlight is required if I am outdoors. ....

You have my curiosity running rampant. I can not remember any type of sight hole on the 48.

Have been at the loading bench and taking a break B4 supper or I would go out to shed, unbury hoe and look. ....

My 47 BH frame does have a hole in the frame but as best I can tell, the only thing I can see is a large bolt of some sort. I thought that hole may be for viewing the sight glass but I couldn't see it.
I will have to double check now because I'm so surprised that JD would allow such an oversight on viewing the Hyd oil level.
I'll have to check in the a.m..
To all, thanks for the input.

With the JD 47 frame you have to move your head around a bit to see the sight glass through the hole in the frame. You would think you would have your eyes at the same height as the sight glass. Nooooo, you have to have your eyes well ABOVE the level of th sight glass and look down at an angle and you can just catch the sight glass through the hole. I had the mechanic point this out to me when they delivered the tractor. ....

I think the new 3000 series have a dip stick for checking the oil level,it's located behind the seat just to the left. Also the sight glass has been removed. ....
