 3 Point Hitch

My 3 point hitch on my 2001 JD 5320 will rise correctly but will not go down. I have tried adjusting the rate of descent but nothing happens. With an impliment such as a bush hog on it it will descend very slowly. (30 minutes). I have drained the fluid and cleaned out the screen.

I would appreciate any suggestions.

Thanks

Joerr

The problem is probably at the flow adjustment valve. Either the valve is froze in a closed position, or it needs to be cleared. Make sure when you turn the adjuustment knob that the valve is moving. Sometimes when they freeze up the knob turns without moving the valve. If the valve shaft moves, you will probably need to remove the valve and clear out whatever has restricted the flow.

Thanks for the help. I did as you suggested and that seemed to help but I am still having an intermittent problem. Any other suggestions?

Thanks Again

Joerr

Can you tell me a little more about what you did and what you found. That would help us figure out what your next steps could be.

I removed the drop rate adjustment valve, checked the face for scoring, turned engine over to insure fluid flow and replaced valve. Hitch then operated correctly. Started mowing and the hitch started doing the same as before. It would not go down. Now it operates when it feels like it. There is no problem going up, only down.

Thanks

Prognosis, sticking valve. Inside the drop control valve is usually a ball and spring that controls the fluid flow. If this starts sticking, it's not easy to tell what you have the drop rate set at. I would concentrate more on the drop adjuct valve that the 3-pt hydraulic valve.

In the side of the housing, you will probably see a plug. Under the plug is a ball and spring that the control lever moves to control the drop flow. Make sure the ball and spring are free moving and haven't gummed up. The spring actuates the ball movement, so it could be sticking. It will also act differently after the fluid has warmed the valve housing. Also make sure that this part of the 3-pt housing is free of debris and gum.

Hope this helps. The spool valve is probably not the problem.
