I've got a JD 2020 that I put a JD 175 loader on. It seems a little weak. I lifted a 12 inch cedar tree (limbs and root ball intact). It told a little jockeyin to raise it. The book says it should lift just over a ton. Does this eem like a ton or is it weak? If it is weak what are some possibilities? Thanks, Bob

It wouldn't be hard for me to imagine that a 12 inch tree with a root ball intact would weigh a ton.

Cedar weighs 24 pounds per square foot. ....

I transplanted a number of blue spruce that were about 7-8 foot tall with a root ball that was about 5 foot diameter and 3 foot tall at the middle. I estimated that as weighing about 500-750lbs. The trunk stems were only about 5-6" in diameter. My CUT has a lift rating of about 1000 lbs. I tried lifting my new empty propane tank into place that is supposed to weigh about 1000 lbs and it wouldn't.

A 12 inch diameter cedar tree sounds pretty big to me. How large is the ball. ....

24 lbs./c.f. seems light to me, but I'm not sure if that chart shows the weight of live trees or finished lumber. Since water is 62 lbs/cf my guess is that a live, well watered tree would be a lot heavier than 24 lbs/cf. ....

The tree's been out of the ground since early spring. The ball is well weathered, maybe 2.5-3 foot sphere. It did lift a bit better with the brush hog lowwered. Thanks for the feedback. ....

I think it was doing all that it could and all that it should. If you figure the weight of the loader as well as the load and what the front end end load the tractor was designed to carry for any time I think you are about right. ....
