Hi, im new at this, so please bear with me. We own 80 acres of land in the High desert where it meets the national forest. some flat and sandy, some 150 ft elevation, more rocky.Have and old 30hp tractor. Not enough power! Looking to buy new tractor, and looking at JD 4520 hydro. or Massey Ferguson, 1455 (not hydro). We need to be able to pull stumps, weed controll, post hole, road maintenance, till, maybe backhoe. This is a big investment, and we want to make sure we make a life long purchase, and cant afford a bad mistake. Which, is better, and has best power, and anything else????

I can't speak to either of those machines, however don't overlook what may possibly be the most important aspect of your purchase. The dealer! Be sure to talk to others in the area to determine their reputation and fairness. Any tractor purchase can turn into a nightmare with bad dealer support.

I guess I base my purchases on the machines alone. I bought my JD knowing full well my local dealer is as bad as it gets and the NH and Kub. and massey dealers were great. To me a dealer is just icing on the cake. I still want the cake. For 95% of an average compact tractors duties, a hydo cannot be equalled. How many gear drive skid loaders do you see. How many gear drive commercial mowers?

A good, trustworthy dealer is a little more necessary when you're very green and need help. I wouldn't buy a machine from a bad dealer on principle. That's a big reason why I don't own a Kubota, the local dealer is the worst.

me+5 30 hp might be on the small side for hp. BUT what does your old tractor weigh? What type of tires and what shape? What is the width and lenght of the wheel base?

You can buy a smaller/lighter tractor and the weight difference will be somewhat off set with the 4wd. However stability may then become an issue.

Hydros are probably OK. I've used them on lawn mowers and very large construction equipment. I still believe in the compact class nothing will do everything well and the geared transmission with a clutch gives me much more control and finesse on a wide variety of tasks. I agree a hydro would allow me to mow the lawn faster. But working in the woods pushing the envelope on size it is gear only for me. Large equipment is focused at fairly specific tasks also.

It sounds like you might be more in line with a regular ag tractor in the 40-50 hp range. Many of these are very capable of a wide variety of tasks and have a wide variety of attachments avaiable.

The stability of the larger frame and footprint can not be over looked.

Also for me, as Ken says, DEALER SUPPORT is #1. Bad non responsive dealers are a nightmare. Read the archives.
