Considering the purchase of a John Deere 790 with FEL and adding a backhoe (#7?). I expect to do landscaping type of work (planting trees, small stump removal, drainage lines/trenches) and was wondering how well the backhoe works on this compact tractor. I have used purpose-built backhoes from the Terramite T5 to the CAT 416, but never a compact tractor w/ hoe. The Terramite T5 does 95% of what I need but I like the versitility of the 3pt hitch. How does the JD790 w/ FEL and backhoe compare to the Terramite T5?

I love my 7 series hoe.
The main reason why I went to a tractor is that the allmand/terimite is a true TLB and does not have a 3pt hitch.Dig,scrape, rake ect.Nor can you remove the FEL for snow blowers, push blades, forks ect.
I can take if on/off in less than 10 minutes and the full sub frame makes it pretty much bullet proof. The hydraulics are set so you can't breakit as previous post have noted with 3 pt hitch types.
The newer ones are 4 wheel drive where the older ones are 2. One more issue was ground clearence.
The t5 I think has a little more lifting/digging capacities due to it real tlb design but not much but this was not a real issue with me.I needed versatility.
I had to look at MY big picture and the 7 series hoe was part of the picture.

Thanks for the response JAZAK5. Versatility is what I'm looking for since I will use the same tractor for mowing and box blade work. I just wanted to hear from someone that has actually used the 7 series backhoe. The Terramite packs a lot of punch for its size and if the 7 series hoe will do nearly the same job, I'll be happy. To what model tractor do you have the hoe attached? Is the subframe an add on extra or does it come with the 7 series hoe? Any comment on the 4WD JD790 w/ FEL/backhoe combination?

I have had a BX22 and now have a 4115 with a 46 backhoe. Both machines have 23-24 HP and a 6 ft reach.

The Deere 4115 set-up is about 1000 pounds heavier than the BX and would be very close in power and weight to the 790/7 system you propose.

I can't compare to the terrimite as I have never used one, but I can say that the 46 hoe and the BX before it have done all I have asked of it.

I have ripped out concrete sidewalks and old foundations, excavated leaking water lines buried 6 feet deep, dug out and pulled up a 500 gallon oil tank that was seven feet below the surface, built retaining walls, set rail ties as fence posts, pulled up rocks the size of bushel baskets and dug out stumps from mature trees.

The only advise I would give at this point would be to consider a unit with an HST. They are sooooo much easier to maneuver in tight quarters.

I have a 790.
The hoe is a subframe and is part of the package. It has 2 fork brackets and two locking pins with the top link pinned.
The 790 is the son of 770 which has one of the most reliable track records in the CUT industry.
