 40 H P John Deere ?

I just sold my 755 and now I am trying to decide what John Deere to buy. I will use it for pasure mowing, disking, and to move hay bales out of the meadow. These are 1200lb bales. It has to be 4wd and a front loader. My 755 was Hydro and nice but I am not sure which transmission to get in my next tractor. Manual shift or shuttle shift. Is 40 HP enough?

I'd recommend a quick tach bucket so you could have the bale close to the tractor to help with stability. The shuttle of some sort or a hydro will still work fine for your needs and I'd say 40 horsepower would do your work but a little more depending on the size of equipment and the amount of work wouldn't hurt. To move 20 or 30 bales is one thing but 200 would be a different story. How will you store them? They might be easy to stack by going just a little larger on the tractor size. When going into larger area's to do work the need for an easy forward and reverse action is normally reduced which is why some go to the gear drives or like a powershift for easier gear changes for the ground conditions you are driving on.

I think you would want a large frame tractor for moving your bales. moving 1200lb bales would put a 40 horse machine at a low starting point for safety. I have moved large bales with a 790 deere 30 horse. ( Not Far ....and on flat ground,NOT SAFE AT ALL)to line them up for a larger machine to transport to barn storage.I've since upgraded to a large frame 5205 that is far more safer and better suited for the job.Any dealer will tell you the 5000 seires will be where you want to start and go up from there.I just went through all this last summer.

You can move round bales with a Deere 5000 series machine but as already eluded to above; you will be near the limits of it capacity in some cases. For a few you can get by but much more and you should consider a larger machine. Deere has a special offer for their 6403 base tractor for $26,990. Not bad for a tractor that size plus 98 hp. It is not a true shuttle shift trans. but has the Top shaft synchronized (TSS) 9F/3R transmission. The 4WD is gonna blow the price out another $7,000. Add another $7,000 for a cab. This is all assuming you are insistant upon the "Green Paint"

In your case; I would strong recommend that you take a look at the Kioti DK65S. For about the same price as the base 6403 you can get a 65 hp. Perkins diesel, 4WD, Cab heat & air.

Should my 4410 prove to be too small for applications in the future; I will be seriously considering one of these.
