Looking at the following, 2004 JD 790, FEL, JD 5 ft rear blade, Kodiak 5 ft bushhog, 22 hours on tractor, $13,750. The guy has had it 8 months. What is the hp on this tractor, 30, 29, or 27? Biggest question, what are the specs on the loader? Can't find them on JD sight, are they embarrassed? Not trying to be smart, just wondering. Haven't seen the tractor yet, hope to this weekend. Says it is very clean, kept under cover, loaded front and rear tires..is this good for the front? If he is telling me the truth, sounds like it may be a good deal. The 790 is basic I know, but it still should be a good tractor, right? Want to do a little loader work, maybe add a tiller later, drag small logs...and too, I am not taking the initial depreciation. Thoughts please?

Hi, the pto horsepower is 27. The early 790's were published at 29 or 30 but deere now says that was not accurate. You don't mention which model loader it has, but the 300 is the current model that fits the 790. It has max lift height of 112" and the maximum lift capacity is listed as 961 lbs. at 59" height and 547 lbs at max height. breakout force is listed at 1115 ft lbs. at ground level and 1475 ft lbs. at 59" height. The 790 is a real workhorse for your money. If you don't need hydro, it is the way to go. ....

Thank you for your reply jdgreen. Where did you find that info on the loader? I did not ask him what model it is, because I assumed it was the 300. Do you own a 790? Do you think the 790 is a good, durable machine for light to medium duty stuff? ....

Did JD change the HP #'s again?
Last I heard the 790 was 27 gross HP. 23 or 24 PTO HP.
The 300 series loader is brand new this year to my knowlege.
Since this is a used 2004 model I doubt it has the 300 loader. ....

In addition to their web site lacking FEL specifications, the information about 3 point hitch capacity doesn't seem to be there either. What gives? Is it there, and I just overlooking them, or do they not want you to know these numbers? ....

I have a 3 year old sales brochure in front of me.

The HP is listed as 30 gross, 27 engine net and 25 PTO.

The 3 point is listed as a position control with capacity of 815 pounds.

I have the loader manual too.... The 790 uses a 70 loader and the lift capacity is moderated by a somewhat sedate system hydraulic pressure. ....

The loader may be the #70 model (does not have the quick detach bucket feature), that is what is on the 2001 790 i have. Otherwise it is probably the 419 model (had the detachable bucket)

I am pretty sure a 2004 would have the 27 gross and 24 PTO HP engine, unless it sat on the dealers lot since about 2002 or earlier. If it is the 30 HP gross engine, the PTO would be 25 HP. (both from JD literature)

Someone mentioned the 3ph weight capacity being low- it is low compared to other tractors at 815 lbs. BUT would you ever have any implement that is over that?? Most box blades are 300 to 400 and maybe rough cut mower would be 600.

good luck.

DRankin,
Up until a couple years ago the 790"s were 30 HP.
A year or 2 ago that changed to 27. ....

Yup. It is real confusing.

The government specs book I have lists three numbers. I don't really know how an engine can have a gross and a net number aside from the PTO rating. ....

Hi Ben, I am a mechanic at a JD dealer. I don't own a 790, but I would have to say they have been one of the most reliable compacts that Deere offers. I guess part of the reason is that it does not have as many "bells and whistles", so there is less things that can go wrong. I pulled the specs from the dealer accessable website. I don't understand why they don't put more detailed specs on the public website. I guess they want people to call their dealer when they get serious about buying. The literature in the dealer showrooms have all of this detail in them. Ask your dealer for a copy. ....

JDGreen will certainly have the best and latest information available.

I doubt that anyone could tell the difference between two tractors if one had 30 HP and the other 27. ....
