 Power steering JD 1050

I have a JD 1050 without power steering. Considering putting a loader on it, however I'm concerned that without power steering it will be to hard to turn when loader is full. John Deere did at one time make an add-on power steering unit for this tractor, if anyone knows how I can get my hands on one please reply. Also if anyone has had experience using a 1050 with a loader and no power steering please let me know how difficult it is to turn.Thanx

It may be easier than you think. The 1050 used an entirely external power steering cylinder that tapped into existing hydraulics. JD sells this as a kit for the 650 and perhaps for the 1050 as well. Installation is easy; the kit contains everything needed including bolts and hoses. Price for the 650 kit when I checked three months ago was $871.50.

Jim, Check with your local dealer. The kit should still be available for the 1050. If memory serves, it will probably cost upwards of $1,000. And yes, you do need it with a loader. Without it, not too many people could turn the wheel unless the tractor is moving.

Jim: I have a JD 850 with a bush hog after market loader. No power steering. While steering ease is not the same as on my Boomer 21TD, it is not real bad. I use the loader for loading manure, some dirt moving etc. but generally not for more than an hour or two at a time. I wouldn' want to work it 8 hours/day regularly but for intermittent work it's not a problem (IMHO). If you drive it on hard surfaces for any distance on a regular basis you will get additional wear on your front tires because of the weight of the loader. I elected to not spend the extra $1K for the power steering that I would have needed if I got the JD loader (Bushhog was about $3k installed, JD was about $5K including the PS). I have not regretted it.

PS. I just got a Kelley 650 backhoe for the JD this year... A nice little machine you may want to consider after the loader is paid for.

Peter

Thank-you everyone for your response, I finally got to a J.D. dealer that was willing to open his book and look for what I was asking for and with your help I was informed enough to make him find it. I 've order the kit and should have it next week.
Thanks again, Jim
