 John Deere 510 advice

Hi, I"m new to backhoes but my brother and I are looking to buy one for some work around our houses. Well We are looking at a late 70"s model Deere 510. The machine looks to be in nice condition. Started right up in 20 degree weather (we got to the machine before the owner knew we were coming)It purred perfectly. He demonstrated the machine by ripping out a stump with ease. It did not have any leaks except one tiny one that looked to be on the cylinder on the boom. The only other problem I saw was tiny leak from the water pump that went away once the machine warmed up. Is there anything else I should look at when purchasing one of these things??Thanks,Joe

Welcome to Tractor Point! Definitely check out the condition of of all the pins and bushings in the hoe and stabilizers as well as the FEL. Check the chrome plating on the hyd. cylinder pistons for pitting and peeling. Do a leak down check on the boom and dipper stick to check for wear in the hyd. cylinders. Same with the FEL. What do the bucket teeth look like? The 510 was there top of the line machine back then. It has been many years since I worked on a 510 but I believe they had a power reverser; check that out as well. Does the Diff. lock work? What conditon are the hyd. hoses in? CHECK the tightness of as many bolts as you possibly can. They tend to come loose on these old hoes and can cause considerable damage if overlooked. I strongly recommend going back one more time and working the machine HARD for at least 30 minutes (if the owner did not do so the first time). This is usually when any problems will show up. If well cared for, it could make a nice work horse for you. How many hours are on this machine? I am sure some others will jump in with some other areas to check as well. Good luck! Let us know how things went.

Thanks For the quick response, its to bad, i couldn't read the entire thing!! to be honest, I really know nothing about these machines...the machine worked very smooth, and purred nicely. I did not hear any noise from the motor. I did notice that one of the pins on the bucket looked like it could use a new pin possilbly. The owner also mentioned that a bolt at the top of the boom kept coming loose. I'll be using it only for very light duty around the house, mainly just clearing some small trees and doing some cleanup to the acres of land between mine and my brother's houses. I really just want it to hold up for that!
