 Hard to believe JD 4300

I recently bought a used 4300, a 2000 with 300 hours. 2nd or 3rd owner, no warranty, bought through private sale. Not long after the fuel solenoid went bad. I found out it is a common problem. A $105 problem if you provide labor. A asked one of the good JD dealers and he said "Yeah, oil gets behind the seal and shorts it out, we see it routinely." I asked my local dealer about it and if there was a recall or anything he could do. I got the look like "are you kidding". I figure it is a manufacturing defect so it should be replaced. Next stop Yanmar, they are the engine manufacturers who put the bad part on. They blew me off via email "JOHN DEERE is JOHN DEERE not yanmar, deal with them."
Well I figured I had one last try with the manufacturer of the solenoid. I called them. They called me back, a manager, and then a tech. They were upset with the problem. The manager called the engineer and was told they added a groove to drain oil about 14 months ago to alleviate the engineering error. Anyway, they were the nicest people ever and shipped me a new solenoid from china where they are manufactured now. WOW. All this from a company that has no dealing with retail or the public. A company that can't really get a bad name since no one knows their name. Why can't a retail company have this same sense of making things right when they messed up, owning their mistake. Honestly I was shocked.

 Hard to believe JD 4300

Deere should have done the foot work for you and gotten you the part. In any case it sure is great to hear a story with a good and positive conclusion. Hope the part works as advertised this time.

Interesting story about the solenoid. It is nice to hear of a good vendor story. Who was the vendor? If it is the fuel cutoff solenoid, like on my JD 955, I do not know how oil can even get into it. My engine is the 3TN84RJ, which I am told is the same or similar to the Yanmar unit on the JD4300. Maybe the 4300 has another solenoid in the FI pump?

According to my JD sources, the 4300 has had lots of problems, perhaps attributable to the many different suppliers of parts on it. Yanmar is only one supplier for this tractor!

I will have the opportunity of acquiring several JD4300s in the future, so I am quite concerned with its reliability.

That solenoid manufacturer violated his contract with Yanmar and or JD by providing you with a part. They (OEM's) get very nasty very fast ie; that tractor fire is the direct fault of the suppliers part, all sorts of other part problems are traceable to that suppliers part, etc.. I think the legal term is liability transfer.

The OEM's lock up the suppliers with engineered parts & charge accordingly.

Glad you got your tractor running but engineering Failure Modes Effects Analysis information is closely held sometimes competitive info & your supplier employee put his job on the line as well as his employer's contract with the OEM.

Barry

How can the oil get in? Well you take a good system with a divirced solenoid that worked perfectly, then let an engineer has to do something other than sit with thumb in ass, so it looks like he is doing something for his salary, and there you have it. You have a solenoid that is mounted directly to the injection pump and not sealed off from it. This allows an oil failure, as well as no possibility of manually activating it in the event of a failure. Thanks for all your worthless work that makes life less convenient. As far as getting a part, it is sort of like buying a starter for your car. I could buy the solenoid from any yanmar dealer or JD dealer even though JD hates it, you just have to match up solenoids because they won't let you cross reference numbers. That engine is available to any one for any use so parts are too. Maybe one reason JD is switching to their own engines. The OEM restriction is on a part number and a plug end that matches JD's. If you can solder your old end on new solenoid, it is the same.

I also forgot, I would find it next to impossible to believe Yanmar is the only supplier of parts for the JD 955 or any other Yanmar. Especially in the starter, alternator and injection pump areas. The engine in the 4100-4400 are Yanmars and do not contain all Yanmar parts.

denwood,
I think you did good in how you solved the problem.
And you are correct, not everything on a Yanmar engine is Yanmar.
Example the starter on my JD 850 is a Nippondenso. When it burned up JD want nearly $400 for a new starter.
I had a local starter shop rebuild it with Nippondenso parts for around $100.
I wonder if Barry is going to tell me that is some type of violation ?

I would bet that JD and yanmar could really care less if he got it from the manufacturer.
I am impressed with both of you guys and your inginuity for solving a problem with out paying the astronomical price. Kinda like when I used to run HONDA motor bikes. If a part went bad it seemed like it was always a special order from the hinda manufacturing company Laughing out loud Right! I was just not as smart as you guys. (of course I was 21 back then also)
