 JD 850 Question

My JD 1984 850 has approximately 900 hrs on it. It starts easy, runs great, seems to have lots of power etc. However, it has a fairly loud knock which is most noticeable at idle. It also smokes a bit -- appears to be white smoke with MAYBE a touch of blue. Every few seconds it appears to puff out more smoke than usual, and I think it also makes a very light bump sound when it puffs the smoke. There is no water in the oil, no gas bubbles in the radiator. It has new injectors. Any ideas on what I should look for? Thanks

Scott

 JD 850 Question

Do you use a diesel fuel additive? If not, you might try a good dose of Power Service or another good diesel additive. A double dose may help even more. It works.

 JD 850 Question

Fuel is not what it used to be. Have you tried some Cetane booster/injector cleaner?

 JD 850 Question

It sure sounds like an injector. You mention it has new ones. Did you replace them after this problem started or did it start after they were installed? A good way to check it would be to loosen on injector fuel line at a time to see if the noise/smoke changes when the line is loosened. That will isolate which cylinder has the problem. Then switch that injector with another cylinder and see if the problem follows the injector. If it does, then you can be sure the injector is bad. If it doesn't follow the injector, then it could be a bad injection pump, connecting rod bearing or possibly a scored cylinder.

 JD 850 Question

Thanks -- yes I just installed new injectors as a result of the problem - but apparently the old ones were not the problem. Maybe it is the injector pump.
