Assuming 4WD, machinerylink dot com says in good condition it should go for around $22k. Add some for loader and backhoe and it seems like a good price. What kind of backhoe is on it?

Thanks for your response. The dealer said it is a 48 backhoe.

He is trying to talk me into a 4310 and I noticed you had one. In your opinion would the 4310 be enough horsepower or would you recommend a larger machine? I have to turn a field with a plow as we are beginning a horse farm.
thanks.

I'm pretty sure a 4310 will pull a plow since it has more power than some old farm tractors, but I don't plow. For horses you may have to deal with bales so bigger than a 4310 may be better. You might want to read this thread for more info on handling round bales.

On big is your 'field'?

On paper a 4310 should have no problem pulling a one-bottom plow, (and maybe a two-bottom) and a 4600/4610 a two bottom plow (and maybe a three, depending on size/ground condition).

However - many folks who do tillage work say a hydro can be a bad tranny choice for that type of work. (My dealer included). Significant power loss (to the wheels, not the more common PTO measurement) compared to a gear tranny, and heavy constant tillage work can overheat a hydro transmission - possibly to the point of permanent damage.

I should add that I have talked to several folks who have done 'limited' plowing with their hydro CUTs and generally (once they learn how to run a plow correctly) have been very pleased with the results. The operative word is 'limited'.

Also - to do plowing/tillage work most effectively you need 'draft control' on the 3pt, not just position control. Very few CUTs offer that as an option much less as a standard feature. The large-frame JD's 4000's and 4000 Tens can add it as a field-installed option, the mid-size JD's cannot.

You can't go by machinerylink's prices. They are way out of line. It shows this slightly used 4600 at $22,000 (using Ken's figure) but you can buy a brand spanking new 4610 eHydro MFWD for less than $20,000. A new FEL would cost around $3,500. The backhoe would run around $6,000 to $6,500. That would bring the price of a new 4610 to around $29,500. Using those figures may help you decide if it's a good deal or not.

Saving 4 grand sounds like a pretty good deal but you're not getting a warranty? and (if you're financing) you're not going to get the low interest rate.

Machinerylinks prices do seem high, but I think they are dealer asking prices and not actual sale prices. Actual sale prices may be 5-10% lower than what they show. In addition to Billy's insights another factor is the brand of loader and backhoe (are they both JD?).

 2001 4610 W/ new backhoe

The 4600 looked pretty used and wasn't the e-hydro transmission and the 4310 looked too small for 1800lb round bales.

I took the plunge and bought a new twenty series 4120 with the new contractor grade backhoe and loader. It is the 43hp. For a few thousand more it seemed like the right thing to do for the 3 year warranty. The dealer gave me 9000 for my 4100 gear tractor with 115 hours on it. I paid 9300 from a dealer on Ebay so I was pretty happy. FYI the total was 22K with a new 6x rotary cutter with slip clutch. (after my 4100 trade)

Thanks for your input.
