 JD 4010??

Hello, First post. I have been reading over all the info on this website and finding it very informative. However I do not see much about the 4010. I have just ordered one with a 54" mower and 410 FEL. I am upgrading after owning the Gt245 for only 8 months. My biggest problem was getting stuck in the snow in the winter. Also got a little tractor envy and the compacts are pretty nice looking machines. Was the 4010 a decent buy??? $12999 with mower. Bought 410 seperatly $2500. (Canadian Bucks). Why I ask is a lot of you Fella's seem to have gone eith the 4100 or 4110. Hope I didn't buy to small again??

2acres to mow
wood to move
light landscaping around the property
500' garvel driveway

Thanks!

Like you, I have wondered why the 4010 gets so little press.

I own a 4115, but I do admire the tidy size of the 4010. I would buy it for general usage long before the 2210 or a BX. It has bigger tires and wheels and enough power to get the job done.

I will be interested to hear what you think of it as you start using it.

There is a link below to the splitter I bought.

You would have to add a power beyond kit to your tractor ($250) to run it but at 5 GPM the 4010 hydraulic system would run it pretty slow.

The power beyond kit is a hydraulic hose/outlet behind the seat. I have one because I got a backhoe and that's where it hooks up.

If you are starting from scratch, it is actually the same dollars or a bit cheaper to buy a self powered splitter on it's own trailer than it would be to have a Power Beyond kit installed and then buy a three point mounted splitter. You can buy a self powered splitter around here for $1100 but you have to shop long and to find a decent three point splitter under $1000

The 4010 3 point hitch is identical in size to the 4115 and the lift capacity is about the same.

Everything is too small for something! My tractor will not run a 6 foot brush hog, or an 8 foot backhoe or a generator bigger than 10 KW.

You are buying one of the most reliable tractors on the market, but it won't pull a semi out of a ditch and neither will mine.

Thanks! WHat is recomended for ballast? I will be expanding my driveway and laying down some new gravel. Probaly a couple of dump truck loads. Ballast box? or something handier like a large box scraper?

Also for moving gravel do you find a box scraper or rear blade works best? Any recomended brands??

In Canada Frontiers (rear blades) go for a 1g note. Another brand (starts with a W.... (wagg???) only $400. What the diff?

Thanks

I'd like to have a fancy blade with all the tilts, angles etc. and most important with end-plates but they're too expensive for how much I'd use it. It would do the worn of a scraper and then some. For moderate gravel drive maintenance and landscaping work a box scraper with hydraulic top-link is a more useful tool. However, they can't do significant ditching or drag material from one side of the blade to the other. They also as good as a blade at cutting drive crowns terraces etc.

The main thing about a box is that material can be cut or picked up, moved and then spread all on the fly without stopping. I sort of surprised myself when I realized that I spread the last tandem load of gravel almost entirely with the box. Most blades aren't good at moving material since it comes off the blade ends as it is cut.

Tire chains may help in deep snow. Winter's about over but there's a bunch of discussion in the archives for next year.
