Saw a early '90's JD 970, 4WD tractor w/ a 440 FEL and under 400 hrs go for about $11,300 at an auction today. It is a 4 cyl. diesel, 33 hp. (30 PTO). Blew me away, machinerylink.com indicated it was worth some where in the 8 to 11k range depending on year (w/o a FEL). So it went for went for more than I can get an '01 Kioti LK3504, 4WD w/ FEL and less than 250 hrs. Auctioneer had the gall to start the bidding at 16k, no one even bid 'till he got down to 8k. Saw him make that mistake about 20 times in an hour. Even so must have been 150-200k worth of farm equipment and junk sold off at this farm sale.

Auctioneers rarely make a miskake. They seem to know how to read a crowd and how to go about business.

You really have to know what it is you plan to bid on and how much you will bid.

I've seen USED tools go for more than you can buy new. Old worn out tractor chains same prices as new. Large Tractors go for less than salvage.

Compacts go for unreasonable money.

I just went to one for a 35k pto gen I figured $600 would be my top offer after looking at it. He started high came to $100 to get bids started bids jumped up at 200 and 500 on one it went for $3300 I almost fell over.

The worst part is the auctioneers own bidders that bid against you. I've left a couple of old pieces of junk go because they tried to get it higher than I was willing to go. We were bidding in increments of $5.00, on one old piece of junk, when I had reached my set limit he tried to get me to go $.25 above last bid by his guy, wouldn't do it. The cart was still sitting there a week later. The owner had to dispose of it.

That happens at a lot of auctions! I was at a farm auction and watched a new spade with a 9.95 price tag on it and a worn out broom sell for 24.50. I saw a 3010 JD with loader sell for 13,500 while people were standing next to the new farmer laughing at him for bidding so high for a 8000 dollar unit. We send a lot to autions and it always baffles me as to where these people were when it was on our lot priced for sometimes thousands less!

That 770 sounds like a nice package for the money but something is wrong as the 770 by my book starts in 1990 and a four wheel drive is 4800. So for the low hours lets add 500, loader 1500, backhoe 3500, and ?.

This guy made enough "mistakes" IMHO that I won't be wasting any more time at his autions. I suspect he was "told" to start the bidding at 16k on a tractor that should go for half that, he did it on over a dozen pieces of equipment, some which were scrap iron value only (saw him try to sell a "trailer" for $20, ended up taking $2). He was saying things that were just plain wrong. Pointed to a 16' flatbed 2 axel 7k GVWR trailer in good condition (not even drop axel) and said you couldn't get it for $2500 new. He was right, you'd have over paid by $900 if you had paid that for it. Claimed he had the invoice for this JD 970 indicating it was bought new for 23k (back in the early 90's, ha ha what a joke). BS, that would have had to included every other green piece of equipment in the sale plus a few that weren't green.

I guess it's a point of view. So, over all did most things sell HIGH or overpriced or low and underpriced? Did he get rid of everthing?

PT Barnham had a saying and me thinks a lot of auctioneers learn it the first day of training.

Art I've been looking at the big auction comming the 11th in Cortland. I am very unimpressed with the people putting a big emphasis on Guillutios equipment line. He's the one that killed all tthe cows and burned the house. His equipment is junk even the new stuff I do not think he owned a grease gun either.

But there is enought other stuff to make a good sale. Hopefully I won't have to work and can spend the day there.
