 John Deere 4400 Updates

I am looking for the end results of all the individuals who have purchased John Deere's new 4000 series tractor, one of particuliar interest is the 4400. How are they performing? Has the factory been supportive of any necessary repairs? And finally is every one satisfied with their selection?

 John Deere 4400 Updates

I have owned a 4400 hst for about 8 months now. have had numerous problems with little things and a few big ones. I think I got one of the First out of the factory. The dealer has been real good to me, no complaints there. When I complained to the dealer about some of the things wrong and they sqwuaked up the line I got nowhere. I e-mailed the company via the website and that almost prompted me to get rid of the tractor because the guy that phoned me back was very non-chalant. Then the dealer called me and told me that my e-mail must have shook them up, I have a meeting with the district manager to resolve my problems. To detail the problems is kind of a drag, but the major one involved the transmission. I am still not too sure if the thing is repaired to last. I owned a 955 and a 755 and never had one problem. i would like to know if there is some problem down the road that the company will stand behind it. In another note, I really like this tractor. It has lots of power. There are a few controls that I feel are poorly placed. The PTO is in an awkward place if you need to do something that you turn it on and off while raising and lowering the 3pt a lot. The mower height adjustment is in a bad place and is not as intuitive as the 955. They designed the PTO in such a manner that you can't run the mid pto without the back (a major annoyance if you have a rototiller on the back and need to mow for a little bit or something like that). there is also an issue with the turning the tractor, any sharp turn will cause a scuff that will kill the grass where the front tire runs. Other than that I really like how the tractor runs and the power curve. I have my meeting on Aug. 2 and will post the results here.

 John Deere 4400 Updates

Ditto Mike's comments, except that I have only owned my 4400 for three months. It has seen several repairs and is need of another which I will talk about in a separate posting. I owned a Kubota 8200HST for ten years and the total repairs amounted to a tachometer cable and it NEVER went back to the dealer for any repairs. Next I purchased a JD955 and it was flawless in operation also. I wish I could say the same for the 4400. The PTO went out when it had 8 hours on it and that required a major tear-down of the back half of the tractor. The dealer is excellent so I don't have to treat them like a car dealer. The R4 tires do, indeed, tear out grass and kill the grass if a medium turn is made, but for loader work, it has been fantastic and is a real workhorse. The Kubota was so dependable and flawless that it earned my bragging rights. But this JD4400 has had enough little things and a big repair or two that I will have no bragging rights about this tractor. When it works right, it is a joy to use, but it loses power periodically and nobody seems to know what to do--and this is the problem which I will post separately about.

just to clarify, I have turf tires on my 4400 and it still tears the grass on turns. One other thing, I would like to know if there are any other 4400 owners that are experiencing another turn related issue. On the left front axel there is a group of 3 large allen bolts facing rearward. I noticed that the two outboard to the left bolts are beginning to take on a shine. Upon further inspection, the inside of the left tire is beginning to wear where it rubs. have a look at yours and let me know. the dealer checked my toe in and it is in specs.

One point I would like to make. A lot of people say that their dealer has been great with all the repairs. But all these are under warranty and they get paid well for doing the work. I had to take my 4100 in twice and the dealer was happy to replace a hyrdraulic line that was wearing due to a poor design and he said he would just do it again if it reoccurs. And he will get paid again. I want to hear about the dealer that does the repair when it comes out of his pocket.

I have a 4300 and had posted a grass tearing problem before. (I have turf tires also). Deere knows of the problem and is going through testing of a new front end for our tractors- according to my dealer. My dealer told me not expect anything until fall on this. Hopefully we will be getting this fixed soon as it really detracted from the appeal of the tractor. I would also note that the front end tires on our tractors are much narrower than the 4100 or the old 750 that I had owned. I knew there would be problems as soon as I had taken delivery!
