Should I Buy Used 4310...Price Check

Should I buy a new or used 4310 mainly for mowing and odd jobs on 5 acre lot?

Specs:
2WD (don't think I need 4WD)
420 Loader
SynShift ((don't think I need ehydro or epowrreverser)
Turf Tires

Asking $12,500 for the used tractor with only 200 hours on it and is a 2002, but I don't believe warranty will transfer with tractor from original owner to me.

What can I expect to pay for a new 4310 tractor with above specs (I will have to add 6% in sales tax to the final price).

What should I do??

Appreciate your advice and comments!

Jeff

If you have a loader you might need 4 wd. It is nice to be able to back out of the pile.

One rule of thumb I was told by a dealer was to depreciate the value of the tractor by $5 to $8 per operating hour.
(This was in CDN $; in US it would be $3 to $5 per hour)
In your case, this would indicate a reduction from a 'new' price (soley on usage) of about 200 x 3 or between $600 and $1000. This doesn't account for 'type of usage' or any other factors.

Don't know if this is a reasonable depreciation rate or not...

Do you have any idea why the original owner traded it with only two hundred hours? Maybe he didn't think he needed 4WD or a sync reverser/hydro either.
Like Mark said, any amount of loader work and 4WD really makes life easier. Same for the sync reverser or hydro. Sounds like this 4310 would make a nice tractor for a nursery. For a much more useful tractor get 4WD and the upgraded tranny.

Some More Information/Clarification

The Used 4310 is not at a dealership and is being sold through a personal ad that I ran across.

The reason the person is selling the tractor is that it was purchased for golf course use and then the owner sold the golf course and it is no longer needed.

I currently have a Ford 8N and a Ferguson TO20 that have serviced me quite well that I will be selling. I need something with a loader and rear hydraulics for other attachments.

Thanks for all of the advice....keep it coming.

Jeff

i wouldn't own a cut without 4wd but thats just me. i think you might better off buying a newer maybe less hp tractor. it is easy to get a 2wd tractor stuck.

Jeff,

If your sure the 2WD will work for you, go for it. It's a steal at that price, if the price includes the FEL. Also, the warranty will transfer to the new owner. At 12.5k, that's 28% off of list price. That's not including the FEL.

Jeff, I've got a 4300 and a 4310 both with 4/wheel drive and the 12/12 reverser. It is amazing the amount of work you can do with a loader, but I'm afraid with 2/wheel drive and especially with the turf tires youre going to be real dissapointed. On wet grass or the slightest muddy condition the weight of the loader alone out front will probably have you stuck. With 4/w/d you will get along ok with the turf tires, but R4's have worked great for me, there not hard on turf, but in wet conditions you've got much better traction. The price may be fine now, but at trade in time it may be a little hard to move.

Hopefully this helps, 1) the warrenty will stay with the tractor, so you will have the remaining warranty. 2) go with the FWD, if you ever resale this machine, the difference you pay now will be nothing compared to what it will be later, in other words, I highly recommend the FWD.
3) I would recomend buying a hydro. If the new one is more than you can afford now, Ill find you a used one. I just sold a JD4300 2001 model with hydro, FWD less belly mower for $12600, the unit only had 145 hours on it. Belly will run you another $2200 new, but used ones are out there too. If you buy a gear drive, sooner or later, you'll have to split it. These Hydro Transmission have been holding up VERY WELL. The first time you split the Trans. You paid for the Hydro. Email me your number and Ill give you my number and I will help you anyway I can.
Thanks,
Ryan

You can get a new J.D. 790, 8 sp gear with 4WD and FEL for about the same money they're asking for the used 4310, 2WD...

The J.D. 4310 is a lot heavier tractor with a much stronger loader
but being only 2WD, I think the 4WD 790 would out perform it...

I gave $13,200 plus tax for a new 790, 4WD, loaded tires, with FEL. I run it in 2WD 95% of the time but put a heavy load on
the FEL, I'm glad to have the 4WD option...
