Looking at a 79 John Deere with low hours and have a general question to those who use these. Will this tractor pull a 4 foot bushhog regularly safely and not shake itself to pieces??
d

I think a 650 has 14 pto hp. Many rotary cutter manufacture sites give specs for different models. I'd check several sites for recommended minimum hp's and weights.

Part of the answer of whether one would work depends on what is cut. Most cutters are come in light, medium and heavy duty models and are rated to cut 1", 2" and 3" material respectively. I suspect that the minimum HP recommendations for many 4' light-duty models are greater than 14 hp but that just means they won't whack 1" saplings easily or very fast. They'd likely do a better job on lighter brush.

Weight is another part of the answer. A 650 probably is rated for around 800 lbs. 3ph capacity. These ratings usually are defined as 'weight centered 2' behind the lower link pins.' Cutter weights are centered further than 2' behind the pins and 3ph capacity should be de-rated to accommodate a cutter. The weight issue is something to check, but I don't imagine there'd be a problem with most 4' light-duty cutters.

yes, the 650 will pull the 4 foot mower with no trouble, the 650 is a 2 cylinder tractor and will have to maintain upper level rpm's to work. I have used this tractor with a 6 foot belly mower and it works also well, only keep the rpm's up. the 2 cylinders is the problem , together they have no torque ability unless kept high reved. other wise the tractor is and excellent unit.

Irrespective of any engine, it's pretty much tied to PTO RPM when mowing. Even my wife who doesn't like noise at all has bumped up the rpm on our riding mower when she uses it because it cuts better.

There should be a bunch of reading in the archives on HP, torque and cylinder #. Lord knows we've written enough about it--myself being the principal length culprit.

I have a 1985 JD650 with a 4 foot rotary cutter. This thing cuts like the dickens. This is the strongest 14hp you will ever use. I have not been disappointed with mine in any respect. The size is very manuerverable too. Mine is a 4x4 and when engaged has the potential to get you in a lot of trouble(it will pull itself right over the irrigation ditch if I let it!). I added the ROPs to mine when I bought it and would recommend you do the same if it doesn't come with one.

I have a JD650 with a 4' bush hog and have used it successfully for cutting pastures for several years. You have to keep the RPMs above 2000, noisey but not virbration. I have turf tires on the rear and that makes for a smooth ride.

I am strongly considering a mid 80s jd650 with loader priced at 7 grand -- where can I get complete specs -- am currently interested in the weight of the tractor
