 650 4WD/loader-right machine?

Hi,
I have 2 acres of rough land to brushhog and till/disk for landscaping. I have found a late 80's 650 with loader, that is clean, 1300 hrs and he wants 6500 for it. He will throw in a backblade, and scoop for 7500 delivered.
Will this machine have enough power to brush hog and move some dirt? Is this a fair price?

Thanks,
Scott

 650 4WD/loader-right machine?

Scott,
I have a 650 mfwd that I have used with a rotary cutter for the last 7 years. This is an outstanding machine, tough as nails, mine works and works and works some more. It has more than enough power to do what you posted. I am selling mine because it did not have a loader and the wife gave me free choice on a new one for putting her through vet school! I really didn't need a new one but I jumped at the opportunity. I will really miss my 650 it has been a faithful work horse never complaining once. By the way I have mine up for $6650 no loader, 4' rotary mower, all new R4s, Battery, Brakes. Looks and runs like new, always stored indoors. My point is with a loader and depending on condition the price seems fair. Offer him $6000 including the blade(you don't really need the scoop) and I bet he takes it.

An additional $1,000 for a backblade and a scoop?

I know delivery is in there too, but these items new cost about $200 for a blade and $250 for a scoop. Quite a delivery charge.

I recently sold my JD 650 mfwd. Mine was in rough condition with 2500 hrs. I got $5,000 with no loader.

I agree that it is a quality made, tough machine, but I will make one comment. I used a 6ft landscape rake to do some landscaping and it definately did not have enough power for this task. If you plan to do any disking or boxblading or raking, I would suggest you get 5ft wide implements at the biggest. My 650 really strained with 6ft wide implements.

Jerry

I agree with the above posting. I do think this holds true for any tractor, you have to ALWAYS size your implements for the intended machine. Given this rule you shouldn't be disappointed.

I doubt there's anywhere in North America where the market value of $1000 for a 650 would indicate anything other than a tractor ready to be parted out--the salvage value may even be greater.

In most places, it's either a great deal or a huge problem waiting to happen. I think I'd have a mechanic evaluate the tractor and estimate repair costs needed to bring it to decent working condition. For most tractor parts, dealers or salvage yards are the only sources for parts, and dealer parts are very expensive.
