I am about to purchase a 1998 JD1070 MFWD with a little over 1000 hrs on it. It was a lease from a golf course. The tractor is very clean and comes with a brand new 430 loader. From a mechanical stand point, everything is in excellent working condition and there are no visible leaks, tires about 70%. He is asking $14,000 for the tractor and brand new loader. The tractor comes with a 90 day warranty and the loader 1 year. Is this a fair price?

That 1070 was and still is quite a dandy. At almost 40 hp, and over two tons with the loader it is a serious tractor. Maybe a little much for cutting the suburban backyard....but just about right for the guy with a few acres and some horses.
Was it used as a mowing tractor at the golf course? If so, it should have turf tires and that makes it quite desireable compared to one used primarily for construction work.

The tractor will probably be used little for mowing. I have fifteen acres of over-grown farm land that I would like to get back in shape. I plan to use the tractor mainly for clearing small trees and brush, cultivating and also snowblowing. I currently have a Kubota B8200 and the tractor just doesn't have enough to get the job done.

As for the tires, it does come with turf tires. This will be my first eperience with turf tires on a tractor but from what I have been told and read they should suit my needs. I am also getting them filled for additional traction and stability with the loader.

I think you are lucky to have the turf tires; it is an expensive option on the larger tractors. I like turfs for comfort, stability, and for being gentle on my ground. Like everything, they do have some drawbacks. And if you need a lot of traction in the winter you may want to make some chains for them. My experience is that they are more likely than the Ag tires to get punctures. If it was a major problem, I would probably get them foam filled. So far all that has been needed is a tubeless tire repair kit which consists of some gummy rubber strips and a tool looking something like a giant sewing needle. It has never been necessary to dismount the tire from the rim.
