 JD 4400 Hydraulics Not Working!!!

I just purchased a used 4400 Tractor with 420 Loader. On my first time out---a stump broke the hydraulic return line. After waiting on the part--I installed and put in 303 fluid. The loader and 3 point worked immediately. I drove the tractor off the stump and checked the fluid---filled it up the rest of the way---I was about a gallon short of full. Right then the loader and 3 point won't work. I changed the fluid and filter while it was down---so no debris in the filter. I checked the valve under the seat and no debris.

The book references a Hydraulic stop valve?? Is that something that needs to be reset??

Pulling what hair I have left out. Bucket is on the ground and stopping the tractor from moving. Also---this is an HST and it is driving fine and PTO works good.

Any ideas??? HELP!!! Thanks, Jon

Jon;
Welcome to the board, we'll give it a try to help out.
You say you broke a return line, from where to where does the return you broke line go?
The loader and three point worked soon as you replaced the line, then you replaced the fluid and filters then the loader and three point don't work, correct?
Does the power steering and brakes work?
OK, now you mention 303 fluid, I hope not, Deere hasn't recommended that since the 1960's.
The hydro drive still works? The hydro drive and the other hydraulic functions are separate systems. Your loader, three pt. etc, are fed by a pump on the side of the engine. Being the hydro is fed by a pickup tube in the sump of the transmission and the engine mount pump is fed by another source from the sump then perhaps you have an air lock somewhere in the system that isn't allowing fluid to be fed to the pump, I'm not sure, just throwing out ideas. If you truly do have 303 fluid in the sump then perhaps it is too thick to go thru a filter that feeds the pump, just another thought.
Frank.

Thanks for the reply. The fluid I'm using is HY-GARD universal fluid which is from Tractor Supply and says 303 also---and is equal to J20A/B/C. The book calls for J20D but was told this would work??? Is there a separate place to fill for the front loader and 3 point on the 2nd pump?? I thought you filled them both through the fill on top of the 3 point? The line I busted was the line from the front of the engine underneath the tractor and back to the transmission (hit a stump).

Jon;
I double checked the service manual a bit a go, I was shooting from the hip last evening.
Yes, it also calls for JD 20D or equal fluid, but since my SM and your owners manuals were printed Deere has did a change of recommendation to HyGard LO-VIS fluid, summer and winter, I don't know what it's generic equal is.
There is only one fill point and one sump, behind the seat above the rockshaft arms.
Did you use Deere filters, sometimes the generic ones aren't quite what they should be for proper flow and filtration, I'd avoid them.
If this was the big fat line you broke, it feeds the engine mount pump, are you sure the fittings are tight and not sucking a bit of air, that will spoil the flow to the pump.
Now the SM method for priming the pump is to disconnect the wire connector at the injection pump so it won't start then crank the engine for ten seconds. Next reconnect the connector and start the engine then turn the steering wheel lock to lock, you shoud have pressure to the loader and three point. Reason for that procedure is that a dry pump can destroy it'self in seconds, if you don't have steering pressure immediately on startup, shut it off and search for the reason. See what happens, Frank.

Tried it and nothing worked. This is a 4X4 tractor---and steering power works fine.

Appears to have 2 separate pumps coming off the left side of the motor. I cracked the line on the bigger rear line and nothing came out---no pressure.

I also took each of the quick disconnect from the loader and no pressure there.

Any ideas???

Jon;
We're at the house in town for a few days and my service manual is at the house on the farm so I'm shooting from hip again.
Ok, if my memory is correct the side mount pump on the engine is two separate pumps in one housing both fed by the big tube from the sump. The smaller half of the pump is for accessories, steering, brakes, PTO, etc., the bigger half of the pump is for outlets for the loader, three point,etc.
Now your steering PTO, etc. work, so that would indicate that fluid is getting to the pumps. Why one is working and the other not, I'm not sure.
Was the inlet tube to the pumps the only tube you serviced when it was broken by the stump? Has the outlet tube from the bigger half of the pump been damaged, pinched off enough to restrict flow and gone un noticed?
Sorry, but I'm about out of ideas, somehow it will get figured out, let us know what it was, ok.
Frank.

Frank, When I hit the stump and broke the feeder hose housing---the metal from it went into the tank. When I filled it up---the metal sucked into the pump and tore it up! Ending up replacing back pump and rebuilding the front one just in case. Back up and running now! Thanks for the assistance! Jon
