Ron, I purchased a 2wd '79 JD-950 w/75 loader in excellent condition for $7500 (western NY). I would estimate 4wd and '85 model would bump the price up considerably. MY 1998 Farm Equipment Guide Blue book mentions 4wd 950 pricing auction pricing as: Low: $4410, High: $9592, Avg: $7121. Hope this information helps and Good luck on the acquisition. Regards Mark

Used loaders are extremely difficult to locate. I've had my JD850 for about a year and have been looking for a used loader for it ever since. I finally found a complete used JD75 loader about an hour away from me for a reasonable price and raced to the seller to buy it. The seller was located in Maryland and received calls from Conn. and Indiana from potential buyers. I believe he received over two dozen calls in the span of two weeks. Needless to say, I was not able to negotiate the asking price downward at all.

If you do locate a used JD loader, be aware that the loader makes use of the tractor's selective control valve (the on-board remote hydraulics). If you tractor does not have an SCV, you'll need to retrofit one. The conversion kit is about $1200 for the parts alone at JD. My tractor did not have hydraulics, and being unwilling to pay that much money for green paint, I've adapted an aftermarket (Prince brand) loader valve.

The other option, of course, is to purchase a new aftermarket loader. One advantage of an aftermarket loader is that some (Bush Hog brand, for example) are available with a self-contained joystick control valve in the event your tractor does not have an SCV.

Mike, I picked my up in a local Farm Center. They are not cheap around $60 but they are a great reference as they list in most cases year/serial #'s, auction prices and tractor specs. I Believe they can also be ordered mail-order. There tel # is: 1-800-673-4763 and website address is:
