JD 1070 price check and what to look for in a used machine

I've been using a JD 750 for a couple of yrs. I like the machine but it's not big enough for the tasks I'm trying to accomplish. I've found a used dealer w/ a JD 1070. It has 300 hrs,a 440 loader, sync trans. and was used comercially with a sweeper for some retail complex. He's asking $16k. Is this a reasonable price? Could clutch damage occur in 300 hrs? I've heard it's $2500. to replace. How about dust in the engine from sweeping? Am I paranoid or what? I'm initially using a farmi winch to log with on a 40 acre woodlot, building a timberfame home. stone wall rebuilding etc. It does come w/ turf tires and I will need somthing more aggressive. Any info or comments would be appreciated.

Eric, I don't know if the sweepers of that type are much of an load on the pto or not, but I do know that pto leaf blowers can take out a clutch in one season if not run with caution. My brother in law had a 1070 at the gulf coarse he worked at and they went through clutches often because of the leaf blower and the way employees operated them. Clutch replacement on the 970&1070 in my area is around 6-700.$ for both sets of clutches. ( they are two stage clutches) As far as dust, as long as the filters were maintained as needed there should not be a problem. Price doesn't seem to bad for that amount of hours, but check it over good for leaks, dirty air filters, and etc., hope this helps. budinohio.

Bud, Thanks for your insights. I am looking at the JD1070 tomorrow. It's 3 hrs. away so I hope I'm not wasting my time. He actually has 2 machines almost identical. The one with 250 more hrs. is $500. less and has hyd hookups(not sure of proper name) in the back which I could use for a york rake, I own, set up for hyd. tilt. Any Idea what this feature is worth in $. Also, one of the machines may have a mid pto setup. I'm not clear whether this is an extra or if both machine came that way as a normal stock item. Maybe you or some one else could answer this or direct me to a link w/ 1070 specifics. I tried to find a jd brochure at a dealer w/ no luck. Although I've learned a good deal from this site. A JD dealer actually gave me that $ figure for the clutch replacement on a 1070. It sounded like a lot but how would I know, He's the dealer. One last ques. Anyone know if the rims for a 970 fit the 1070. I'm getting conflicting info. This site has been great.

Eric. I can answer a couple of your questions. Those rear hydraulic outlets are sometimes refered to as "power beyond" and they are not cheap. I was quoted $500 in 1985 for my ford 1710 and I wish I had bought them. As to the rims ,I believe the 970 used 24" and the 1070 had 28". Bolt pattern might be the same but I do not know. If they did fit the smaller rear tires would cause a bad case of "lead" [refer to firestone home page for involved explanation of "lead-lag}. Dave

Eric, mid mount pto is an option that can be added. As for rims they are the same bolt pattern. As far as ag tires the 970 came with 24" rears and 15" fronts, the 1070 came with 13.6x28 rears and 16x8s in the front, which were an option on the 970, but all were same bolt pattern. The price for power beyond on the Deere 4000 series is around 120.$ don't know about 70 series. budinohio.

Bud, Thanks for that info. I ended up chooseing the 1070 without the power beyond option bcause it had more hrs. I know that you would run a backhoe or anything that needed flow but had control valves with the power beyond. My immediate need is a connection for a tilt cyl. mounted on my york rake/grader combo. I want to leave my loader connected so I need another open line and valve. I figured the easiest and cheapest and most flexible way might be with a "power beyond" attachment and then to purchase a control valve from surplus center or North Hyd. catalog. This is all new to me so maybe there's an easier, even cheaper way.
