 Kubota B2100 50 hr. maintenance

Hi all, I just performed the 50 hr. maintenance and the process has prompted a couple of questions. Can anybody provide the proper head sizes for the bolts on for the front and rear transmission drains? How about the oil pan? I used an cresent wrench because I didn't have a metric set, but I'd like to have the proper metric sizes on hand next time. The second question is that I'm a little puzzled on the transmission fluid change. I drained the fluid from all three drain points and then added 3.25 gals. of new fluid thru the point behind the seat. Ran the tractor at idle for 10 mins, but now the fluid level on the dip stick seems about twice as high as is should be. Does it perhaps take longer or more work for fluid to migrate from the rear to the front pan?

Mike, This might be some dumb questions, but you did not mention these things. Is the 3.25 Gal a dry fill capacity, or a drain refill capacity. Never had a Kub so I don't know what specs are called out in their book. Secondly, did you change the filters, as if it were not done they hold some oil. Don't run it overfull at any rate. I would drain some to fall between the marks on your dip stick, as I believe foaming will occure, if overfilled. Secondly before you run it, I would call your dealer to ask why when you put in the required refill capacity(if that what 3.25gal is) why it shows over full. Good luck, hope this helps. Bill

Mike, speaking of dumb questions... You know that the reading is taken on the dipstick WITHOUT screwing it back into place, right?

How much oil came out? Did you drain 3+ gallons?

The bolt size - use a micrometer or dial caliper and buy the appropriate sockets. Don't risk stripping things with the crescent wonder tool. If you don't have a caliper put the adjustable on, snug it up, take it off and measure the gap with a metric ruler.

Any metal shaving recovered? I've seen another post that talks about a tablespoon worth of metal coming out of the hydro screen.

I'm rapidly approaching my 50 hour service on a l3710, count yourself lucky it only took 3 gallons of fluid, mine takes 12+.

Did you use the Super UDT hydro oil? If not, why not?

Guys, I noticed on another discussion board that nearly all of us have found that the transmission does not hold as much as the manual says, even when you change the filter, clean the screens (or strainers, depending on which you manual calls them). When I did the 50 hour service on my B7100 four years ago, I put in the amount the manual called for, then had to drain some out (but I don't remember what the amounts were). And when I recently did the 50 hour service on my B2710, the manual calls for 3.7 gallons and it held exactly 3.0 gallons. Of course, I also pulled 3 drain plugs, but have learned since that I overlooked a 4th one; the "front transmission case" plug, so maybe it'll hold a little more next time.

Thanks for all the replys, I'll try to respond to some of the questions now. The manual calls for 3.17 gals of Super UDT. I estimate that I drained ~2.8 gals, and I know I added the 3.25 gals my dealer sold me for the job... so perhaps I'm 0.45 gals high??? The filter was replaced (of course). The transmission strainer had only about 1/8 tsp of filings on it.

I drained all 3 drain plugs _really_ well... probably 20 mins each. So I'm still puzzled why only about 2.8 gals was drained.

Manual says don't run with transmission fluid low... doesn't address if its high... should I try to drain some out or not?

Also, all filters and drain plugs were _really_ tight on my machine... the transmission screen was the _worst_ and no seam showed... I was beginning to think that I was cranking on a solid piece of the chassis...

By all means drain the fluid to get it back between the low and high marks on the dipstick. There wouldn't be a full mark, (or even a dipstick), if the transmission was meant to be filled to overflowing.....
