I am considering buying a JD 950 2 wheel drive for 7500. It is in excellent condition with 1000 hrs. Has anyone had any experience with these machines? What would be their weak point?

I own a JD-950 2wd bought used 6 months ago. The tractor has about 2000 hours on it. I am happy with the model 950. My only negative observation is the hydraulics are a little weak (at least I think). Not sure if this is normal for this vintage tractor or maybe I have a tired hydraulic pump. I have found, the motor has to be wound up midrange to get any kind of performance out of the loader and 3pt hitch (especially so when cold). I read a while back there was design change by JD on the hydraulic filter on the later 950/1050's. From what I understand, this change was introduced to improve hydraulic fluid flow. My only other problem is the tractor w/rollbar just (and I mean just) clears my 7ft barn door. Good Luck with the purchase.

Mark,
Sounds like you need to test your psi. To see if its putting out the right pressure. this is done by a PSI gauge hooked into your HYD coupler and moving your hyd lever. your local tractor service dept will have a few of these. They will also look in the book for the range it should be operating at + or - 100 PSI.

Mark, Of course Dana's right about checking the pressure on the hydraulics, but I'm curious when you say you have to rev your tractor to mid range; what RPM are you talking about. Don't all front end loaders and 3-pt hitches move slower and with less power at lower RPMs and faster at higher RPMs?

Thanks for the posts. When I say midrange were talking 1200rpm+ to get any results out of the 3-point hitch or loader. At idle forget it things hardly move. If were talking new hydraulic pump, does anyone know if that repair is within reach for a weekend mechanic like myself? Haven't priced one but I would imagine a new rebuilt pump is probably $500-$750 or even more? Any thoughts here. Thanks in advance.

Regards
Mark

Mark, What does your tractor idle at? My 4200 idles between 1000 & 1100 and I was told this is a normal idle speed. If 1250 is a midrange perhaps your idle is set to low.

Mark, It sure sounds to me like everything is normal with your hydraulics. Of course, I have a Kubota instead of Deere. I used to have a B7100 and now have a B2710. The B2710 was delivered idling at 1,200 RPM, but I backed it down to about 850-900 RPM. But I don't even try to use the front loader or 3-pt under 1,200 and usually in the range of 1,500 to 2,000. It WILL lift the bucket at idle, but very slowly and sounds like it's putting a load on the engine. And that has been the case with both my tractors; purchased new.

Mark,
A JD 955 acording to my green book RPM range 1400 min to 3425 max.
I had to speed my 755 up alittle 1450 (the engine stoped shaking/vibrating & was not near as noisy)

I am guessing the idle RPM on the tractor right now is around 800-900 rpm. This coming Spring I will have to talk to my local JD delaership about having the pump output pressure checked to see if it is indeed a bad hydraulic pump. I am thinking that it is since my neighbors 750 does not exhibit the same behaviour. Even when the engine is loafing the 3-point hitch responds quickly. Again thanks for all the helpful information!

Mark I had a simular problem with my 950 about 20 years ago when it had about 1500 hours on it. They found that the hydraulic piston for the three point hitch was scored and had to be resleaved, its been fine ever since they repaired it. good luck
