what causes the shut off solenoid to get real hot on my 6x4 diesel john deere gator, powered by yanmar,gator is old. new solenoid

There are two stages of power to the solenoid. One is hold voltage when the key is turned to the run position and the other is pull voltage that occurs when the key goes to start. Pull voltage activates the solenoid and shuts off when the key goes back to the run position. Hold voltage keeps the solenoid activated. I don't remember which is which, red and white are the two wires. If both stayed on all the time that could increase the amps and heat the solenoid, I guess. Or the new solenoid could be faulty. If both the red and the white wire stay hot in the run position there is a problem in the harness. ....

my ign switch was bad so I jumped accross the terminals and had all three wire connected at same time,burned solenoid thanks for info ....
