You need a puller to get the clutch off and a special spanner wrench to unscrew the spider inside. The rollers are available only with the spider assembly from Deere. I have roller sets for 60.00 plus shipping.

It is not left hand thread. The tool holds the sheave and spins the spider. If you can hold the spider, you can turn a large pipe wrench on edge and put it down over the spider on one leg and try to unscrew it that way. ....

More clutch questions, my sheaves are polished to a glass smooth finish, should I run some scotch-bright over them to break the glaze or should they be that smooth? I am going to replace the belt as it is the original 98 belt with around 600 hours on it.

when I reinstall this clutch or a new one , how many foot pounds of torque should I use to seat clutch on engine? ....

I too, am looking for a set of rollers for our old diesel 6x4. Everything else in the primary looks great--moveable sheeve doesn't wobble, ramp weights are smooth, plastic bushes good. Clutch was engaging OK, but was not disengaging reliably. All three rollers worn through to shaft below. ....

So I built a set out of a piece of steel rod that was in my shop that was about the right OD and ID. Easy to make and install and works great. The ID fit nicely on the pin and I put a little grease on the pins. Not sure how long it will last but good for now. Hardened steel would be best for sure like the drill guides others have talked about. I wish Deere sold just the rollers as they used to. The spider is really expensive!

BTW, The secondary clutch sliders are available for snowmobiles and are identical. ....

Thanks Dinger,
I have posted a few inquiries on the net. If I can find a source I'll post here. Otherwise I'll probably spend the boss's money on a spider kit, as he'd have to pay me almost as much to make the rollers. Comet, the company that apparently made the clutch, has gone through a change of ownership and doesn't seem to be supporting small repair parts. ....
