just bought a gator 6x4 don't know the year, and noticed a wire on the carburetor,and it is not connected to anything, any one know what that goes to?

The wire should plug into the engine harness - it powers a small heating element in the carburettor.
As for finding the manufacturing date of the Gator, any JD dealer should be able to tell you that from the serial number. ....
