 JD X728 question....How to bypass the reverse shut-off?

Hello,
I recently purchased a 2006 X728 garden tractor to be mostly used for snow removal ans some lawn cutting and was wondering if anyone can help me with what needs to be done to cancel the reverse shut-off feature on this specific mower? I'm 37 years old and there are no kids in the household and would like to be able to transition from forward to reverse and back to forward without having to mess around with holding a handle in a certain position. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
-John

Is there currently a manual way to do this on your tractor? For example, my GT245 lawn tractor requires that you hold up the PTO button while going in reverse (which I later bypassed).

 JD X728 question....How to bypass the reverse shut-off?

Hi JasonR,
Yes, you have to hold the pto handle while you change between forward & reverse. I'm looking to eliminate doing that so I don't have to use any hands to go between forward and backwards. Any ideas?

Thanks,
-John

If you look at the other side of the PTO handle, are there 3 sets of contacts? My GT245 had:

two contacts with the same common (a N.O. and N.C.)
the third contact was N.O. and closed when putting the PTO in the 'bypass' position.

Do you have a similar setup?

N.O. = Normally Open
N.C. = Normally Closed

 JD X728 question....How to bypass the reverse shut-off?

Hello Jason,
I looked at the switch and it was exactly as you stated(two sets of contacts with the same common (a N.O. and N.C.and the third set was N.O. and closed when putting the PTO in the 'bypass' position). I removed the 3rd set of terminals from the wire connector/plug and made a jumper wire to connect the 2 wires together and all seems well. Is this how you did it on your GT245?

Thanks,
-John

 JD X728 question....How to bypass the reverse shut-off?

I believe that's how I did it. One side effect I noticed was - if I'm going in reverse with the PTO on, and I attempt to turn the PTO off - it doesn't turn off until I'm finished going in reverse.

I believe the 'bypass' that has been permanently wire-nutted is over-riding the PTO off relay when traveling in reverse. There's a relay board in my tractor with all of the relays the PTO switch goes to, but I haven't bothered to re-wire those to prevent this - as it is a rare scenario and I'm aware of it.

Thanks for all the info Jason. I think I can live with that one side effect.

 JD X728 question....How to bypass the reverse shut-off?

Jason,
I went out and tried what you were explaining on your tractor and on mine when I shut the PTO off while in reverse it will indeed shut off but I cannot start the PTO again while traveling in reverse. I have to release the reverse pedal before the PTO will re-engage. A little different than your situation but in either case not a big deal.

Thanks again,
-John

 JD X728 question....How to bypass the reverse shut-off?

Very interesting... It sounds like yours is wired better (more fail safe) in the event a contact fails. I thought it was odd that the "PTO off" was paralleled with another signal vs. being in series with it. It appears they corrected that in your model.

Eitherway, glad to hear your bypass was faily easy to do.

All the best, Jason
