My '84 JD 850 owners manual states a crackcase oil change with filter should be 4.7 quarts. When I fill my 850 with this much oil it only registers about 1/3 the way up on the cross hatch marks on the oil dip stick. So:

Is 4.7 quarts the correct oil amount, or should I fill it upto the top of the dipstick cross hatch.

Unless it is readily apparent that the dipstick in not OEM; I would fill it to the top of the cross hatch on the dipstick provided it does not require an excessively large amount to do so. Factors such as varying volume capacity of oil filters not to mention that Deere is famous for misprints in their tech literature. ....

I add just under 6 quarts on my JD 850 on an oil change to get to the full level on the dip stick.. ....
