  Newbee needsHelp! E324 3pt won't lift?

Greetings,
I recently got a fair deal (I think!) on an E324, today while doing some work on a steep slope the 3pt stopped lifting. The hyd. level is full, it still won't work on flat ground. Anyone know if this machine crosses to a name brand? approx. age (s#123)? Who sells a manual? Parts?

I sure enjoyed reading all the tips and tricks on this board.

Thanks in advance,
Brent

Here I thought I was going to be smart and find a use for junk mail. Some how I got on a mailing list for the publisher who sells I&T tractor and other manuals. So I thought simple and useful, I'll just dig up their catalogue and find the tractor. No such luck. There are other sources of after-market manuals

Even without a manual we might be able to figure out the 3ph problem but probably need more detail about the problem. For example, it would be very handy to know if it has a loader and if it still works.

There are some common reasons why 3ph's stop working other than failure of the 3ph, pump or relief valve. Some reasons are clogged hydraulic filter or screen, stuck loader valve (if fitted), broken or out-of-adjustment linkage or inadvertently changed diverter valve (again if fitted). A closed flow control valve will prevent a 3ph from lowering but it will still raise.

If it's a used tractor, I'd change the filters and oil on general principal, I'd make sure any auxiliary (loader) valves are centered by jiggling the controls and check the diverter valve position. A diverter valve usually is set to auxiliary postion if equipment such as loaders are mounted and to 'remote' for 3ph only use. If there is a valve and it's in aux, I might change it to remote just to see the 3ph will work. If there is a loader, you should be aware that with many hookups, the 3ph won't raise while any loader control is working. I'd also move the 3ph lever and see if there's anything that looks like it should move or rotate that doesn't.

Since you are new to tractors, you may not recognize the sound of an open relief valve (sort of a scream not unlike an auto power steering turned too far. If that sound is present, a tractor shouldn't be operated too long. The oil can overheat and damage the pump. Hydraulic lines get warm when worked but they shouldn't get hot.

First thing to check, as Tom said, is the flow control valve. It is usually located under the seat and usually appears as a knob that has labels like open, close, faster, slower and off.

If it is anything like my E14, there is a filter in the transmission housing that needs cleaning.
On the E14 it is on the left side, right under the seat. Remove a round plate, and there is the filter. It is about 1 1/2" in dia, and 6 inches long. Clean it and replace the gear oil.

I had a 1947 Fordson 9N with the same problem (miss the ol' gal--bought a new New Holland TC33D). It made a crunching/rattling sound. After tearing it down I found that big chunks of bright red cast iron rust from inside the transmission--directly over the pump--had fallen down and into the pump cavity and broke it into three pieces. $400 later for used pump parts it worked fine.
