 Rear Finish or Other?

Grass is growing...

I have about 3 acres of grass to mow, have decided to get a rear mower for my 4110 gear for a variety of reasons, mostly that grass is the lowest priority for my tractor (and me -- I despise grass, look at picture 8 to see what I did to about 1/2 acre of it). So perfect cuts don't matter much to me, it's just a "keep it short enough to walk around" thing.

I also need a very small unit -- ideally 48" -- to get through a number of tight spots. Yes, I know about the wheel tracks, I'm not concerned.

What I don't know squat about is whether I really need a finish mower or can get by with something else cheaper and possibly more flexible. I went around to all the local dealers last week and all they have in finish mowers are Land Pride and JD, for $1500/1785 respectively. Ouch!

Anyone have any pointers?

 Rear Finish or Other?

On one lot I used to own, we just set a cheap bush hog real low and cut it every couple of weeks. The downsides are the cut of course is not as good and the runners will leave ruts if you aren't careful (mainly on turns) and it would stick out a little farther in the back than a finish mower. The grass didn't look bad and it didn't take nearly as long. The other upside is a cheap bush hog shoudn't cost but maybe a 1/3 of the finish mower. It won't look the prettiest but it will get the job done.

 Rear Finish or Other?

I bought a KingKutter 48" RFM a couple years ago for $895 at TSC. I still use it on my 7800. It's not a top of the line unit, but it does a darn nice job on the lawn. For the money, it cuts every bit as good as the MMM I sold off.

If you don't care what it looks like then a brush cutter would be fine. Look at tsc(tractor supply) they are going to be the cheapest place to by one. If you want something a little nicer look at woods or bush hog. Any tractor dealer will have a brush cutter or be able to get one for you in a few days.
good luck i can get you a price on a 48' bush hog squealer tomorrow.

I have Land Pride rear finish mower and it is a rear discharge and it works great. The nice thing with the rear discharge is grass can be 6 to 8 inches tall and when it is cut it does not clump up like a side discharge. But I agree that if I didn't care about looks I would get a bush hog which is cheaper.
