 Flail Mowers

I read the articles on mowers but i still a little unclear as to how the Flail mower is built. Is like a Reel mower, but with a bunch of loose blades whipping around? How do you sharpen it is it dangerous to do so?

 Flail Mowers

A 5' flail mower has about 60 L shaped cutter baldes. To sharpen them you take them off the mower and sharpen each one independently. They are easy to sharpen but take alot of time. A flail mower is safe to operate since it does not throw stuff out. It produces a cut better than a bush hog but not as nice as a finish mower.

 Flail Mowers

The number of blades depends on the size of the flail mower. I've a smaller one--only 9 blades. It's mows a tiny 41" width, but has other advantages which save metime compared with other, wider mowers. It cuts, mulches and leaves a very even spread of mulched whatever I cut. If you have brush or orchard prunings, it will shred and leave them evenly spread over the ground. Flails comes in much wider widths too (with more blades), enough to use whatever PTO HP your machine has available. The size of branch a flail will shred and mulch depends on the particular flail and HP. A small one like mine handles branchesup to 2 inches in diameter--something I wouldn't try with a finish mower--something the rotarymower wouldn't mulch. IMHO, a flail saves me time by cutting my field and orchard nicely--ina single pass.
