 brush hog problems

I recently got a new Land Pride 1572 brush hog. When I hooked it up and engaged my pto the first time it went bang and broke the shear bolt. I put in a new one and raised the 3 pt so the brush hog wa off the ground and tried again. The same thing happened. The blade swings free and the pto works fine. I put in a harder bolt and tried again. It made the same bang, but it did not shear the bolt. It mowed fine, but each time I would turn off the pto it would make the same bang when I would startit up again. Does anyone have any idea what is going on?

Since we can only go by the description of the sound and reaction between the tractors' PTO and the PTO shafts shear pin.....I'd say make sure there is plenty of clearance for the blade and stump jumper to turn free...Second engage the PTO lever slow and easy or let the clutch out slower after you've engaged the PTO on a machine without "live" PTO output...Third never use over a grade 5 shear pin.

If the gearbox on the Landpride is OK,and it rotates freely and the tractor's PTO output shaft is in good working condition..then the problem is likely operator error...Remember to engage the PTO slowly and at low engine RPM..This practice will minimize the torque shock of the sudden turning input into the stationary blade..

have fun

S.L.

I have the rpm as far down as it will go. since iit is live pto the clutch does not matter, although I tried that. The pin is a grade 5.

Engage the live Pto clutch slowly, or do you have an older FORD that has a live PTO, but is not controllable on how fast it engages. The slam you hear is the blades snapping back from the inertia exerted from the PTO being engaged too fast.
