Sizing rear finish deck to tractor

I am in the process of buying a JD4200 and a rear finish mower to go with it. The dealer said that I could use a Beeco C50-RD7, which is an 84" mower. Do any of you have any idea if this tractor will pull this deck okay? All the mowing is flat. I didn't want to over tax the tractor or bog down but they said it would be fine.Any thoughts on this?Ron

Seems that call is pretty much up to you. If you don't let the grass get too long between mowings, if you keep your speed right, if you keep the deck clean beneath (no build-up), if you keep the blades sharp, etc. etc., the 84 deck should work. IF you do otherwise, then the deck may be too large or you need a more tractor horses. Its not a call someone else can make for you, not knowing how you do things. However, if the dealer says it will work, and the two of you have an alternative (smaller deck?), then hopefully you could try out the 84 with the condition that if it doesn't work in a reasonable fashion, you can take it back. Good luck.

I tow the Befco 6' mower behind my Kubota B2400 without any trouble and I feel I could handle the 7' model just as easily. I felt that the 7' model was just too big to get into and between some of the trees that I have to mow around. The only negative thing about the mower was that it tended to leave windrows of cut grass if for any reason I let it get too tall or cut it when it was wet. Some of the grass I have to cut on the bottom part of the garden is pasture grass that I am slowly reclaiming. I installed a mulching kit that pretty much cured the windrow problem but it meant that I have to mow at a slower speed. Still, I have the time and it's better than those unsightly clumps of grass that have to be picked up. If your land is relatively flat and open and the grass isn't too tall or tough, I don't think you will have a problem with the 7' mower. It will be harder to maneuver though.

The question of "How much?" is probably the most commonly asked one there is. The answer is more one of physics than anything else, how much horsepower is required to perform a given task, be it cutting grass, blowing snow, pulling a plow or running a tiller. The bottom line is not will it run a six-footer, yes it will. The information you need to know is how tall is the grass that my machine with a six-footer out back will cut. In the golf course or turf growing industry, we generally run mowers that seem WAY out of proportion to the rest of the world, the solution is simple, if you only cut 1/2" MAXIMUM at a tiem you too could run a 14-16' mower with a 40hp machine. However, when the lawn gets a little shaggy, a 6' is all it will handle. And all of this doesn't even include the mechanical losses of driving the tractor itself up and down the lawn. That's why a small commercial mower will run a 5' deck with only 18hp, and gas powered not diesel at that (lower torque). Clear as mud, huh? Best of luck.
