 wind tunnel mowers

Wind tunnel 3 point hitch 72 inch mower or rear discharge 72 inch mower. What are the advantages and disadvantages of each? The wind tunnel is allot more money. I can see the windtunnel advantage over a regular side discharge mower but has it got any advantages over a rear discharge that would justify the price difference? Thanks for your help in advance!

What's a wind tunnel mower?

General consensus seems to be that rear discharge spreads the clippings more evenly. Side discharge is handy for blowing leaves.

A wind tunnel mower is a type of design that puts a baffle right around the circumference of the blade and has more space above it as well. The purpose of the design is to create a sucking force to draw the grass blades up as the grass is cut. This is supposed to leave a superior cut look to the lawn and also allows for the lawn to be mowed in damp conditions. They always go for a premium over the flat housing types

From experience I can tell you that if the grass happens to get a little "shaggy" between cuts, as often happens here in the early summer, a wind tunnel design is almost a necessity. Because of the amount of air movement created by the mower it not only 'sucks' the grass upright, but also blows the cuttings out over a larger area, allowing them to dry out quickly, instead of having big 'clumps' which will leave dead spots, and or weeds behind later. Also, if you plan on using a colection system, or dethatching blades the air flow is a great help. In the fall leaf clean-up is a breeze, literally, cutting in every decreasing circles, or alternate direction rows will result in easily managed, already mulched piles of leaves. Best of luck.
