 .17HMR update

On Sunday I did more shooting with the .17 HMR. It is a NEF single shot with 22" bull barrel with Bushnell 3-9X scope set at 9X. Was shooting at 50 yards with a rest on the forearm and sandbag on the butt end. I found that with 5 round groups, 3 rounds would group about the size of a nickel and 2 rounds would be flyers. If I shot another group with the same scope setting, the next group would migrate over to where the earlier flyers had been. Some additional flyers would come out of that group. If I shot another set, a group would form somewhere else.

So, after firing a box of shells, I couldn't get it to repeatedly settle into anything tighter than a 1 1/2" square. I was shooting Hornandy ammo. If I use CCI as done originally, I couldn't hold a 4" pattern. That's really bad.

Some people have told me to clean the barrel with a brush and that may be the problem. Others have told me, it is the scope drifting. It was all brand new, and I've only shot about 3 boxes through it trying to site it in.

I know that I'm not the best shot around anymore, I have trouble with my trifocals and shaking, etc.

Doing the identical rest and sandbag setup on Sunday, I held 5 shot groups of a dime with my AR-15 with my 4X Colt tactical scope. The crosshairs are coarse!

Likewise, with my Dad's old Marlin .22LR boltaction and 2 1/2X Lyman scope with fine cross-hairs, I shot groups of about the size of a nickel at that distance.I need more magnification.

From everything I had read, etc. I expected to be able to drive tacks with this new gun. I'm disappointed in the whole setup. I normally only use Leupold scopes and more expensive guns. A single shot gun shouldn't take rocket science to make accurately.

So at this point, I can't say for sure what is wrong. I'll trying brushing the barrel. Was thinking of sending it in and getting a .22WMR barrel which they do for about $63.00. Maybe that won't be any better!

Another guy told me to check the mounting point of the forearm to the barrel and make sure there is only one contact point between it and the receiver end. That has a bull barrel and don't think deflection is the issue.

I'm thinking either the .17HMR is a bad round or NEF doesn't make a good barrel or doesn't have the right size or twist ratio.

Yooper, is there any other scope you can try. I've got that same (probably) Bushnel scope on my gun and I've never done as much missing as I have with that scope. The clarity of the bushnel is excellent and that's why I bought it but I think the optics are suspect. With the large field of view and cheap optics there is only a small central portion of the optics that is correct (linear). If your eye is left or right of center at all the sight point can move (non-linear part) but it still looks like a good sight picture.

Before buying the bushnell I had an old Weaver on this gun from the sixties. The field of view was small and it was no longer clear but if I had the crosshairs on it would hit where I pointed it. You couldn't move your eye left-right at all without losing the image, so you were always looking down the center of the optics. Now I think a Leopold is in my future. You really need to spend the money for good optics.

Late last summer I found a Winchester .30-30 in my barn with a Tasco 4X scope on it. It had been up there for about 30 years. Everything was in perfect shape. Maybe I'll switch scopes and try that out. I could use the nicer bushnell on the .30-30 if the scope is any good for deer hunting.

ShortMagnum:
I know what you mean about good optics. About 3 years ago I bought a Leupold Vari-X III in 6 1/2 -20X for my .22-250. It is awesome!! It is surprising what money can buy.

Definately try the tasco scope. That way you can eliminate one potential problem but I think you may find that it is the scope. My younger brother bought a bushnell for his .22 several years back and he exchanged scopes three times before he got one that held zero. Fortunatley the store had no problem with him exchanging them. Don't remember what store it was but you may be able to do the same thing.

Actually, I also found a 20 gauge pump. It wasn't in quite as good of shape though. I had it cleaned-up!
