 timming mark

I have a cub cadet 1811 hydro. Blew a governor assembly and
sent it trough the block. It's a kohler m-18 engine.
Trying to reassemble the motor but can't seem to find the timming mark on the crank, had no problem finding it on the cam gear, but, for the life of me I can't find it on the crank shaft. please help

Like to help but it's likely going to take somebody with a manual. Since you've torn down the engine you no doubt know that usually there's a mark on the crank gear. The engine is placed on a compression stroke and the marks on the crank and cam gear are lined up and both gears are keyed onto their shafts.

I'm thinking 'What else could it be?' Maybe a mark on a flywheel or water pump pulley used for ignition that marks TDC and there's a reference mark for the cam gear someplace on the block. Don't know, I'm just poking around in the dark.

Much like Tom says, it has been my experience the timing mark is on the crank gear and not the crankshaft. With #1 piston at TDC on compression stroke the marks should line up. You definitely need the shop manual for this one to verify all is as it should be. There will usually be a series of pictures along with the write-up covering this. Have you called the Cub dealer and asked to speak with one of the mechanics? My dealer has no problem at all with this if I have a tech question. Give them a try. Good luck!

THANKS FOR YOUR REPLY: There is no mark on the ckrank gear what so ever, but there is a mark on the counter weight near the gear. It's a little line in the cast near the base of the weight on the shaft portion near the gear, could this be it???

I might be tempted to guess especially if the engine had ignition timing marks on a flywheel and the ignition marks and the cam/crank marks agreed with each other at TDC on a compression stroke. I don't think I'd want to guess on this one though and I'd want verification from a manual. Similar to what Mark said, my NH dealer's service manager has done that sort of lookup for me before I got my repair manual and that's what I'd try.

I think it's possible on some engines to put a valve-head through a piston if the cam is out of position so I want to be certain about the marks. That possibility could be checked by rotating the engine through a cycle by hand with the spark plug out. Even if there weren't damage to the engine It'd sure ruin my disposition if I guessed wrong and had to tear down the engine again.
