 Nedd Help Quick. 2135 PTO.

I realize most of this forum deals with compacts, but I'm trying to help out a friend. He has a Cub Cadet 2135 L/G tractor with 14hp Kohler engine. The problem is the PTO. When the tractor is running and he engages the PTO switch, the blades begin to spin as expected. However, when he turns the PTO switch off, the blades continue to spin. The only way to shut the blades off is to turn off the tractor, then restart.Another tip: This tractor has safety reverse meaning the blades turn off automatically when you engage the reverse pedal. This is no longer working, meaning when reverse is engaged the blades continue to spin. Obviously the two problems are connected. Does this sound familiar to anyone? I assume a bad electric solenoid or possibly a bad clutch.

Please help.

I tried to post on this before, but it seemed to error. You need to determine where all the connections are located.

If the solenoid is or clutch is sticking then the problem would likely be temperature related. It would likely stay on for a time after you turn off the tractor. You could test it by tapping on the solenoid with the swtitch in the off position and the PTO running.

If the PTO immediately goes off after the tractor is stopped and restarted then there is likely a problem with the relay or one of the switches. It could simply be the relay sticking or a break in the fine wires of the electromagnet. Most tractors have a switch under the seat that stops the PTO if you leave the seat. You can easily check the continuity of the switch with a voltmeter. It might be leaking power to the relay when the main switch is off. The main switch could have the same problem, but the seat switch is more likely as it takes more abuse and weather. You might also try tapping the relay when the switch is off.

 Nedd Help Quick. 2135 PTO.

Your friend's Cub has an electric PTO clutch, this is a fairly common setup for small L & G machines.

The clutch is basically the same as that found on the A/C compressor in a vehicle, when 12V. is applied to the unit it locks the pulley to the shaft, without power the pulley spins free and acts as an idler pulley.

Your friend's problem cannot be related to a safety switch since that would create an open circuit and prevent any engagement of the PTO, his problem is exactly the opposite, it won't release when it should.

There is really only one possible cause the electric solenoid/clutch assembly is dirty, rusty, worn or has some debris affecting it's performance, whatever it is it is preventing the clutch from releasing until it comes to a full stop.

I would bet that if he turned the PTO to the 'off' position and tried to cut some heavy grass the blades would quickly slow or stop, if this is the case then it is NOT an electrical problem but merely an out of tolerance situation.

Best of luck.

Look for a long thin relay back by the battery. That is the culprit.
