 Cub Cadet 1720 PTO cable switch failure

The PTO cable/switch on the console is not activating the PTO and the belts on my Cub Cadet LT 1720 Hydro. Please help!!

Last year the serviceman "fixed" it with new filters, blades, and mis- aligned the mowing deck. I got it aligned this weekend (what a fun process!!). The battery was dead but I could jump start it and the engine was running fine. Turn on the toggle switch for the PTO (this model does not have a nice lever handle like the old Cubbies!!) and NOTHING.

Does anyone have a clue about how to FIX the cable, have the correct part number to get a replacement, and ideas about where I can find instructions to take the old one out and put in the new one?

I love CC lawn tractors because I can use my hands, and not my right foot, destroyed/rebuilt after a car accident, and I don't want to go out and get another LT...just for a simple cable/toggle gone bad...

 Cub Cadet 1720 PTO cable switch failure

The PTO is operated by an electric clutch by flipping the toggle switch. You could have a bad connection, bad switch or a clutch that is out of adjustment. Additionally, on some Cubs, a switch shuts off the mower deck when the hydro is in reverse.

My first guess would be the electric clutch is out of specification. The clutch plates have a certain "Gap" range that they operate in. If the "Gap" is too large, it won't engage. Too narrow, it won't shut-off. When it is at the extreme end of the working range, it won't engage or disengage after it has run awhile and has gotten warm and has grown from thermal expansion.

A couple of trouble shooting tips (you may want to try some of these in a different order than written below):

1. If you flip the toggle switch "ON" with the motor running at low speed, you should be able to hear a clicking noise if the clutch is attempting to engage. If you hear the clicking noise, the clutch is out of adjustment.
2. If you flip the toggle switch "ON" before starting the engine, it shouldn't start because of a safety interlock. If the tractor starts, it is one sign of many that the switch isn't functioning.
3. The toggle switch is an electric connection and not a cable. Check to make sure you have good electrical contact at the switch and at the clutch.
4. If the battery is soooo dead, you may not have enough voltage to trip the electric clutch. Suggest trying to operate the switch with the jumper battery still connected.

The tractor is the correct one but my deck is a little larger. It has 3 blades so it is about 42 or 48 inches wide.

Thanks for much for the 4 steps for trouble shooting. I think I will try them with # 4 first, and get the battery charged up by running the cubby off my car's battery, and letting it run (without the PTO and blades running).

The other 3 steps I have tried, but without getting the reasoning behind them so that your explanations are great!!!!

I have been able to find a diagram already to show the clutch alignment and spacing and how to adjust it. This is is going to be fun!

But the PTO belt broke after a 3 minute run. I went to Home Depot and of course they do not have PTO belts for older cubbies.

My cubby is the 1720 and I think the belt is the 80 inch long one 754-3037 V belt.....it runs from the pto pully back to the deck.

Do you know what belt it uses?

 Cub Cadet 1720 PTO cable switch failure

PTO belts are made of a special compound to be able to withstand the constant, high speed 90 degree bend. I believe they have a Kevlar chord inside. If you get one that is too stiff, it doesn't bend easily and flips off the pulleys. A Cub-Cadet belt from a dealer will run about $40.00+. Cub has all sorts of belt cross sections and lengths depending upon tractor model and mower deck design.

I purchase India equivalents from my local industrial distributor that gives me a business discount for about $12.00. He needs the exact Cub Cadet part number to cross reference. You may be able to do this through a local industrial distributor. If not, I get mine from the Binkelman Corp. in Saginaw, MI. My contact is Dale Smith at 989.755.6330. I'm sure they would do a credit card sale and ship it to you.
