Can you run 540 RPM implements on high speed PTO at half Throttle

I have two speed pto on the Foton I just bought. All my equipment is 540 and I know on my old Ford I didn't hit 540 until I was at 3/4 throttle. Can I run the 540 equipment on 1000 with my rpm down around 1100? I'm just thinking easier on the motor and less fuel consumption. Any thoughts. Larry.

Can you run 540 RPM implements on high speed PTO at half Throttle

Larry,

For the most part, the answer to your question is, "No".

Most of your implements (mowers and tillers) likely require more torque than your engine will produce at 1/2 throttle. You'll find that your engine will begin lugging. This creates tremendous heat, which will quickly destroy your engine.

There are a few exceptions to this rule.......

I have a dual rear PTO available on my Kubota B2920. I use the 960 rear rpm when cutting firewood with the cordwood saw. With a sharp blade, the horsepower requirements are quite low. I'm able to cut a whole lot of firewood with the tractor running at 1/2 throttle.

The same is true for my PTO generator. When welding, the demand on the generator is quite low. I'm able to run at 1/2 throttle at 960 rpm, producing plenty of power to run the welder. However, if I were to attempt to power my house, during a power outage, the demand on the generator would be quite high, requiring more power from the tractor than it would provide at 1/2 throttle.

Hope this helps.

Joel

No. Too hard on both the tractor and the implement. Both were designed for most efficient operation at 540. Lower the engine revs puts your work farther down on the torque curve, which actually makes it work harder. Spinning a 540 implement faster wears out - or even breaks - components that simply weren't designed for faster RPMs.

Ok. I was just curious. I saw a video of a guy who does a lot of brushhogging and he said he runs his pto at 1000 with rpm's around 1100 which is pretty much lopping along and say's he runs all week on 5-6 gal. of fuel. I had never heard of this before so that's why I was asking. I run the old Ford 8-10 hrs. wide open when I'm mowing and wondered if this would be better. I just got the Foton so I haven't mowed with it yet. Larry.

I am asking here but if your tractor had two speed PTO and was a good bit larger in HP than the implement you are using, would it then maybe work?

A second question, there are implements made for 1,000 PTO speed. Is this not what that is for?

Is not the splines on the two PTO shafts also different to help prevent using the wrong speed PTO?

Kthompson,

My new Kubota has a two-speed rear PTO. There's only one output shaft, with the standard 540 rpm 1-3/8" 6T spline adapter. I can connect any 540 rpm implement and run it at 960 rpm.....but I don't do that with most implements.

Snowblowers, tillers, mowers..etc....require max power from the tractor. I use the 540 rpm for these implements, while running the engine at full throttle.

Yes, you could put a 4 foot rotary mower behind a 60 hp tractor and power it with the 1000 rpm output, while running the tractor at half-throttle, but you'd make several more trips around the yard before finishing.

After totaling up the additional hours on the tractor, as well as engine oil changes and other maintenance items, I don't really see any savings........or what little savings there would be wouldn't amount to much.

Joel

There should be a mark on the tachometer - usually green - a little bit lower than full throttle. When using the PTO, you advance the hand throttle until the tach needle is at/in that mark. The reason it's less than full throttle is so that you have a little more power underfoot to help keep the implement operating at PTO speed when you encounter conditions that slow the engine down (mowing uphill, cutting tough material, etc).

That mark on the tach applies for all available PTO speeds, that's the way the PTO system is engineered. But a vast majority of the implements made for North American CUTs are engineered to operate most efficiently at 540. Using engine revs lower than that mark may result in your operating too low on the engine torque curve. If the tractor and implement are otherwise matched in size, this causes premature wear and tear on the tractor over the long run. Plus, it then becomes pure guesswork whether or not the implement is operating inside it's own design speed.

Can you run 540 RPM implements on high speed PTO at half Throttle

A few years back I sold a peanut combine which was pulled by and used the tractor's pto for power. I had used it for green peanuts which is harder work than dried peanuts and the person buying it for green peanuts. A couple of weeks into his harvest he called me upset it was doing a poor job and in talking found out he tried to run it not using the std 540 pto speed, was using something like eco PTO or something his JD had. My instructions were simple, you must run that combine with full 540 rpms with plenty of power, must have solved his issue for last heard from him.
