Repair for a leaking hydraulic cylinder

I have a international 244 tractor with a Woods 750-2 backhoe. Looks like the boom cylinder is leaking, drops after 5 minutes. The cylinder is a 2 1/2 x 16 3/4. Are these worth rebuilding (seal kits) or buy a rebuilt one?
Thanks

Cylinders are usually pretty easy to repack. It's either going to have a screw off head or an inside snap ring to remove. Pull out the cylinder and you will find some o-rings and packing washers. Take them to your local Napa or Hydraulic supply and they will have what you'll need.

Yes, they are worth rebuilding. As was said seal kits are easily obtainable and real cheap compared to a new one. I've had scored cylinder shafts repaired with some sort of epoxy that has held up very well. I've had bent cylinder shafts in the past that pretty well means more parts expense than a new cylinder in most cases. Frank.

If you are near a good-sized town you might want to find a hydraulics shop and have them do it, it's not expensive or difficult, but it can be tricky.

The seals are remarkably delicate and very easy to nick during re-assembly, it is very frustrating to pull it all apart, tear down the cylkinder, put it all back together again only to find the 'new' seal leaks as bad as the old one.

For a few dollars a pro will do it in a flash.

Best of luck.
