 480C power shuttle

I have a '79 480C with a bad power shuttle unit. Anyone out there rebuilt one of the these? The local shop is talking $2500 for a reman power shuttle and torque converter.

10 years ago it was $3000, so you're getting a bargain it sounds like.

Are they just sending it out to a rebuilder? If so they're likely adding hundreds to the price.

Too many hands in the cookie jar I call it.

I had my backhoe hydro system rebuilt. I was told anything from "an engineer will tear down your pump and motor and measure every part" to "yeah, we rebuild them ourself". Those prices were as much as $1500 MORE than what I paid.

Turns out all those places were going to send it to the same place I found which was the midwest's sole rebuilder. I drove 3 hours each way, but got to meet the owner, take a tour of the 250,000 sq foot facility, and watch my pump and motor be torn down and rebuilt. Funny though even though the owner told me all the other guys would have ended up sending my stuff to him for rebuilding, the owner thought he was going to screw me when I went to buy a new gear pump through him before I left his plant---he added $100 for doing nothing more than making a phone call---he didn't even touch it---it came directly to me from his supplier. I found this out when he messed up my order by having the wrong pump rotation sent to me. I got talking to his supplier which was the manufacturer. They told me what they sell them for and I blew a nut! I ended up getting my money back from the first guy and bought directly from the mfg.

Thanks for the reply. I paid $3000 for the backhoe originally and spending that much to fix the thing doesn't set very well. It was a good deal for an otherwise sound machine before the power shuttle died. I found a rebuild kit for about $800 so I think I will dive into myself.

By the way, in case I need to buy a replacement unit, who was the manufacturer that you bought yours from?
