 250 not starting well

I recently started having problems starting my 250. Very long starting cycle and then runs rough. Got a suggestion to prime first. Did that and engine started fine. Problem is that I have to, now, prime everytime I start.

Any suggestions where to start troubleshooting??

Thanks

Have you checked for leak in the fuel system that is letting air in and fuel out?

Yes I did, but I guess I'll have to go over the entire fuel system with a fine toothed comb. There was nothing obviously leaking but I suppose it could be a pin hole. It's interesting to note that when I loosen the nut on the fuel line (as per the manual) and push the primer pump, I get fuel right away so there doesn't appear to be a large air bubble.
Thanks for this suggestion.....any other things I can be looking for at the same time?

Check fuel filters both rough and fine one. Do you use decompressor? Its winter it should be harder to start.

I recently replaced the 2 fuel filter inserts but didn't bother to replace the seals ( O rings). I have the seals on order so I'm hoping that is the source of the leak.
Yes, I do use the decompressor - about 10 - 15 revolutions.

I understand that the tractor should be harder to start in the winter but the problem has only started this year. Last year, had no problems. Besides, it is in a heated garage (12 - 15 degrees C)

Thanks for your suggestions

John

When You are starting the engine with decompressor, if fuel system is OK, You should see white diesel mist coming out of your exhaust. You could ask someone to pump that little pump on injection pump while you are starting it to make air bubbles in system go away(just for diagnose purpose not every time Smile ).There is no need to get new copper o rings, you need to take sandpaper 600 or so and try to make the o ring surface even. when you are mounting them you should heat them with flame and then quickly tighten in place. Good luck!

Simple things first. Always have the fuel tank at least half full. I saw this as a post and tried it, it works. My hard starting is a thing of the past!
