Got my Ventrac, now some questions

I just got in my Ventrac 400, and really like it. This is my first diesel of this size, and I was wondering what RPM I should run it at? THe dealer told me to run the thing full throttle! THat would put the engine up around 3500 RPM??Is this right? The engine is the Vangard 26.5 HP

There is no problem with running full throttle as your dealer and your operators manual suggest. When mowing, set engine speed to keep blade tip speed up for clean cutting--usually 3/4 full throttle or more. In heavy going, full engine speed is best because that is where you get max power. When grading or using the slip scoop, use low range and set the throttle to provide smooth hydraulic response of both the hydrostat and the hydraulics--typically not full throttle. On modern diesel engines you don't have to worry about selecting a "proper" engine speed to protect the engine. Run it where it is needed to make the tractor smoothly perform the job at hand. In most applications, I run between 3/4 to full engine RPM and when mowing on hills I am always at full throttle.

I have a lot of experience w/diesels, but have never heard of such an engine or machine. It seems odd to have a diesel rev up to 3500rpm. Out of the 1000 + or-
tractors I have sold, I don't recall ever seeing one rev that high. Jim

Got my Ventrac, now some questions

It's really a Ventrac 4000, I forgot to hit the extra "0". The site is http://www.venturepro.com. It is an articulated full time 4-wheel drive compact utility tractor. Steiner http://www.steinerturf.com also makes the same sort of thing. They share the same quick-tach front attachment setup, and there is a TON of attachments for both tractors. Most are made by Steiner, and most will work with the Ventrac 3000-4000. The first time you drive one, it is a really wierd feeling. In fact, one of the reasons that I did not buy one 2 years ago was that it felt too wierd. I never drove it long enough to appreciate what an articulated tractor can do. This time, I spent 2 hours on one testing it out and I was hooked!

Check it out. I wish there was more conversation on the CTB about them. I know there are a ton of owners out there.

Got my Ventrac, now some questions

Well, I've had my Ventrac 4000 for over a week now, and I must say that I don't regret my decision at all. The workmanship on the tractor is great, the only initial problem I had was a leaky fitting on my slip scoop, and the local dealer picked it up, fixed it, and returned the tractor in one day!

I'm having a blast. THanks Jack for all the help. I'm sure that we will have a lot more conversation on the topic of Compact Tractors. you really pointed me in the right direction, I'm hooked!

Just to give you guys some information about how I am using my tractor, I live in the middle of Amish country in Lancaster county on 5 acres, surrounded by a dairy farm, and three others. I have a 60" mower deck that I use to cut 2.5 acres of grass, and a slip scoop that I can use for just about everything! This week, I was using it to move a pile of topsoil over 50' for spreading, and cleaning my nieghbor's horse stall, and then used it as a wheelbarrel that afternoon! (After I washed it out of course).

I'm really having a good time with this thing!

Got my Ventrac, now some questions

Keith, any experience with Kubota diesels? I'd like to get a Steiner with a diesel, but i've heard some conflicting viewpoints. The 420 Steiners used 16 h.p. Kubota's that were dogs. Great engine, wrong application. The 430s use a 21 h.p Kubota that some say are great, others say not so great. It's a wonderful engine, but the way it's used in the Steiner robs it of its power for some reason explained to me by an experienced Steiner guy.

By the way, you were right. Both Steiner and Ventrac recommend operating their machines wide open whether it's gas or diesel.

Thanks, Jon
