There was no problem with the mid PTO at all. The MMM's driveline was disconnected; the mid PTO worked just great. The problem was in the MMM. And the MMM's problem has been fixed too.<br>

Ah! The mechanical version of Ex-lax: hammer, a broad chisel, and about a half hour of time was all that was needed to remove a great conconction of mud and dried grass. It was so bad that 2 of the 3 blades were only able to move about an inch or so.<br>

Coming home tonight, I remembered putting the deck on about 2-3 weeks ago for the afternoon just so that I could mow the front. It was a mess that day with wet tall grass and weeds, some muddy spots, and then it started raining on me when about 2/3 of the way done. I pulled the MMM off the next day since doing more excavation work with the box scraper.<br>

Anyway, this "problem" was a self-induced one. The blend of weeds, grass, mud, and rain must have been just right for such a buildup. I never realized the amount of mud/grass that could and did collect inside the MMM. The stuff was well-dried from having been in the garage for several weeks. I can understand how mud bricks can be so good now; that was some tough stuff. I never thought to check underneath the MMM prior to putting the it back on yesterday afternoon.

Even taking the MMM off, or putting it on, one has to be careful. The MMM's rear lifting "lugs" protrude up a bit. If not careful, they can hit the filter when moving the MMM in or out from underneath the tractor. The first time the MMM was removed, I just barely dented the filter -- that was enough for me.<br>

Toyota makes great diesels; they just aren't available in the US. We had a 4.5 liter (in-line 6) turbo diesel Landcruiser in Australia that definitely had it over the (new) V-8 that Toyota had. See my Picture number 3. Toyota also had a 4 cyl version that they ran in the Tacoma line as well; there were others as well (take a look at www.toyota.com.au for thier lineup and what's available). I could only hope that Toyota introduces the diesels into the US lineup in the near future as I will be one of the first to buy another one.

My recollection of the Ford Ranger was that it was a rebadged Mazda B2000. Don't know if that is still true though.

What I did not put in the original posting was the dirt type. There is little clay where I am at; it's mostly sand based. The fill that I took delivery of came from a house's basement excavation being built about a half mile from my place.<br>

The dirt's compaction was an issue with me with so much dirt. I was concerned about the lower levels not getting compacted under a lot of dirt. That was the concern about getting so much at once; that thought is "in there" with my original post, but not there explicitly. I really wanted to get some dirt in, get it spread, and get it compacted some before receiving the next load(s).<br>

The tractor runs great and does nearly everything that I want it to do. I just do it a lot slower than one would with a larger tractor. That was very evident yesterday evening when trying to clear-out the ditch. The driver (whom I have not met) was worried about driving across the blacktop driveway to unload. So, he dropped part of the first load in the ditch alongside the driveway's culvert. Clearing out that compacted dirt was a challenge and it is still not completed, but at least the ditch is not blocked now. <br>

There's just not a lot of "oomphta" in the loader, but knew that when buying the tractor early last year knowing that I did not need or require a larger unit. But, with what I am trying to do, nothing really would handle this task in a short time unless it was of a pretty good sized unit. I was thinking when running back and forth from the ditch and where I was dumping about the dealer telling me if I "needed" a demonstrator skid steer, to let them know. I may take them up on it. The driver started about a third of the way down the marked area for being filled ending the 15 loads with about 4 loads outside where I need it.<br>

The bit of dirt to relocate may be to my advantage when considering compaction. I guess that I could get the main area's dirt spread and somewhat compacted. Then, relocate the misplaced dirt and compact it. Maybe it was not such a mistake after all.<br>

The shape needs to conform to the slope that I have instead of being domed. It will approach level, but have a bit of grade to get the water off. We don't get much rain or moisture, but there are some good rains at times. Getting some "terrestrial hair" on it was not thought of, but needed. I live on the side of a hill with 19 foot of drop from the back right corner to the front right. The fill is "down slope" from the driveway to build it up (for extending the driveway and to build the stand-alone garage later).<br>

Oh, what a happy day and time for you; it's great to see that you came to a decision on what you wanted or needed.

I don't have the "sensitrak" option either. Now, after having a few hours on my unit, the Case DX24E which is the red version of the NH TZ24DA, I believe the sensitrak is not really needed. When I really need the 4WD, it is locked in and stays there like when doing dirt work or working with the loader. Otherwise, it gets real easy to spinout when in 2WD. When engaged, it does tend to tear up the ground a bit more in tight turns, but that is expected.

I suppose that one of the cautions the dealer advised you about was when removing the MMM to make sure that the MMM clears the hyrdraulic filter when sliding it out. I was told that too, but forgot about it. My hydraulic filter has a nice (small) dent in it from sliding out the MMM. It could have been much worse. The hydraulic filter location may be a weak point as there is nothing guarding the hydraulic filter with the MMM deck removed, and there not much clearance either between the filter and the ground. With the MMM removed, I would be cautious of big stuff that you go over or sticks as that filter could be vulnerable. A removeable guard for the filter and the HST fan would be great in that area.

There have been others on here stating that seat time was great therapy. I totally concur with that, and I need more (too much travel to the east coast in the past 4 months coupled with doing other stuff around the house when I am home). Welcome.

After my first marriage ending about a year after it started in the early ‘80’s, I was living with my dad for several months recovering from being cleaned-out. I did not want to do move in with him, but he offered. He could not stand my first wife anyway, so that was his way of helping me get back on my feet. Yep, getting married that first time was a mistake from the very beginning.<br>

During that time, dad was about to retire in about a year from Mercury Marine as a Zone Sales Manager (he was a former farmer, owned a tractor dealership along while farming, and had been a Zone Sales Manager for Allis-Chalmers Farm Division and then the Industrial Division); this last territory was most of LA and most of TX with him living in Nacogdoches, TX. Looking to doing something with his time after retirement, he bought a slightly-sloping parcel of land south of town that had a house and a trailer on it. That parcel of land was worked by the both us to become a trailer park; I was the resident manager after it got going. He also bought a liquor store right around when he retired; he was the owner and the day manager and I was the evening manager. <br>

The future trailer park had to be terraced for trailer parking spots. That either required the terracing to be contracted or “do-it-yourself.” My dad chose the long way. He had located a very used JD 350 flat-track crawler with a multitude of major problems: rust, bad injectors, blown headgasket in one of the three cylinders, clutches needing replacement, the right side track adjuster leaking, the chain “shot,” and the rear drive sprockets “worn out.” I guess the price was right. From the rust and all, I think it came out of a salt pit in south Texas somewhere. Anyway, it was a project that he and I tackled mostly. With a cutting torch, we cut off all the bolts attaching each tracks’ plates to the chain saving all of the plates. We cut off each side’s chain into manageable lengths. Replaced the drive sprockets. Replaced each side’s chain. Reattached the plates with all new hardware (using an impact wrench). I got the head redone, got the injectors cleaned and checked-out having to buy a new one. Got the head back on and retorqued. Got it started up with virtually no problems. This was all done in his two and half car garage; to get it in there, we had to take off the muffler. The only thing remaining was to get it loaded-up taking it to the local JD dealer (in Lufkin) to get the clutches replaced. I don’t have any of the cost figures as that was back in the early ‘80s, but I do remember it took us about a month of daily spare time. <br>

After all the work was done, it was a great crawler. We used the snot out of it for creating all the terraces for each of the trailer parking spots. That is when I learned a few more things about dirt work with my father. He showed me how to start a terrace using a log or timber under the downslope side of the crawler to start the terrace leveling. We trenched for the gas line, water main, and sewer lines in each parking spot. He sold the crawler about two years later with the gooseneck trailer; that was after I relocated to the Dallas area. He kept the trailer park until passing away in mid-96 (when I was in Australia the first time).<br>

One interesting or maybe humorous tidbit about him. I was coming home one evening after working there at the liquor store; this was in the trailer park that I was then managing. My place was in the back right corner of the property. Coming up along this right hand drive way, I saw the crawler on the trailer parked up alongside my trailer. In the shadows I saw this crumpled V-shaped piece of blue metal; it was my dad’s Ford Crew-Cab pickup’s tailgate. He told me the next day that he dropped-off the crawler. He disconnected the trailer from the truck, but forgot to drop the tailgate. I guess that you know what happened when he started to pull away. I can still envision the mannerisms and hear the “french” that came from him when that one happened. He’s probably really glad that I was not there to tell him just how good that he really did it (as only a son can do).

I am quite pleased with my Case IH DX24E, which is the red version of the NH TZ24DA. It may take a bit longer to do things because of the smaller size, but it does everything that I want it to do. But, maybe taking a bit longer is OK sometimes. Plus, it surely does not take up all that much space in the garage. I have about 35 hours on mine.<br>

I am doing my own excavation terracing out parts of the slight hill that we live on making a somewhat level grassed area for the kids to play their sports (e.g.: soccer, cricket, “chasey,” etc.). There is another area to the downslope side of the driveway getting fill dirt being trucked in. The excavation and the leveling are being done with a 48 inch box scraper. I definitely have to be in 4-wheel drive using the box scraper. And there are times that I really do get a bit more aggressive with the box scraper where it takes in more than I can handle as the tractor will start to spin-out with all four wheels churning. It is the most enjoyable experience that I have had in many years learning just what angle to set the box scraper at with or without any down force. The FEL does make a great counterweight to the box scraper. I did find shortly after using the box scraper that the MMM had to come off; it was acting more as a plow at times. At 60 inch width, there was a bit of overhang when working along a hill with a 48 inch wide box scraper. I have thought about getting weights for the rear, but have not really had a pressing need since the box scraper is usually on lately.<br>

The tiller has done a wonderful job tilling the vast majority of two acres. And it did not take that long to do either. Maybe it was the soil and the moisture content, maybe the tiller, or a combination of all, but it was really much quicker than I expected. It just flat got into it. The tilling was in preparation for seeding with native grass around the outside of the property. The emergent weeds had been killed-off twice before the tilling. The seed was put in too late; some took, but most was washed away with an intense storm's torrential rain one afternoon about 7 days after it was planted. I will be going through the process again in the spring killing-off the weeds, tilling again, and then replanting the native grass.<br>

The FEL is great too. Have used it some, mostly for moving dirt and other landscape materials around. I tend to do a bit of scoops and back-drags with the FEL getting the huge mounds of dirt left by the dump truck when the fill dirt is brought in.<br>
<br>
Between now and the mid-March time frame, I am really looking forward to some more seat time completing the kids’ grassed area preparation, doing some more leveling of the area being filled-in along the driveway. Mid-March should have me out there with the sprayer followed with the tiller. It’s a great little tool. Seat time is the best therapy that one could have.

That is something very interesting to know about. I have the Case IH version of the NH TZ24DA, the DX24E. Mine is approaching the 50 hour service, and with winter coming on, that is something to keep track of after the service work. Thanks!

The only difference between the NH TZ25DA and the Case IH DX25E comes down to two things: color and headlight orientation. The NH hood and fenders are blue vice red with the Case IH. Both are black, or a real dark grey, underneath. The headlights on the NH are vertical; they are horizontal with the Case IH. Yooperpete stated correctly that sometimes a deal can be struck with the Case IH over the NH (even though they are essentially the same thing); it happened with me. I have last year's Case IH model, the DX24E; absolutely love it -- it does all that I want and more. It just seems that I can not get enough seat time to do the things that I want to do. Once again, I am on the east coast on company travel, as was the week before and probably will be again next week; can't get any seat time on weekends when trying to have a life with my family and getting other things done. JDFANATIC states the obvious where the dealer is the key to the overall experience for the sale and especially after the sale.

Anyone have any words of wisdom in extending or paralleling a standard wired house doorbell? I need to run another "sounding unit" in the basement where the first floor one can't be heard well, if at all depending on the activity there. Do I just need to get another set and parallel the wiring to a new "sounding unit" from the one already installed on the first floor? We have a classroom setup in the basement where my wife does the home schooling our children.<br>

We just started home schooling with our four kids re-taking control of their being dumbed-down last year in the US schools where we live. We returned from Australia last year; the four were all born there and went to school there. They are in the K12 program being run out of COVA here in Colorado (their link is below). At least we can put the quality back into the quality control aspect of their education. The boys are in 9th (14), 6th (12), and 3rd (9); my daughter is in 1st (6).

I've got a LandPride RTA1050 tiller that makes it look easy. It's a Cat 1, 6 tine, slip-clutch, 50 inch width, weighing in at 385 pounds according to the manual. It is a unit that I will probably not use in in fullest capactiy until later (when away from the "big smoke"). It is being used with a Case IH DX24E (which is identical to the NH TZ24DA). The weekend before last, I spent about 4-5 hours preparing about 1-1/2 acres for native grass seed. The till depth was about 4 inches. The "soil" was compacted sandy stuff. After passing through with the tiller, it seemed to be quite powdery with few clumps. I am still quite impressed with the results. And the grass seed has been sown; now just waiting for the "terrestrial fur" to grow. I also have to till in some organic material in the areas where sod will be placed, about 3000 sq. ft., but that will be in several weeks time.<br>

Absoluely loved it (says another kid growing-up in the late 50's and into the 60's), and it is so very true. It got me reflecting about growing up on the farm, working with dad, and just being a kid. Thanks!

There are a great deal of messages "in there" that I have been using with my own kids (ages 6, 9, 11, and 14) over the years even though I'm an older and hopefully wiser dad (we married late and had kids later than most other parents). Of course, my wife being 7 years younger thinks I'm whacked at times. But, maybe there's others things that explain the differences: I'm from the north (WI, MN) and she's from Texas ('nough said), she's almost from a different era, I grew-up on a farm then moved to a lake area where she grew-up in the city, we are from different disciplines (I'm an engineer, she was a RN), and so on. The kids are surviving even though they can only use their Game Boys for a while like when on a road trip of over several hours or special occassions, the play station is used about two hours a month, they HAVE TO go out and play or ride thier bike or just do something, they need to explore thier world from their perspective. They have known the difference between "right and wrong" for many years; my wife and I are constantly doing "course corrections" where they can maintain course for reaching adulthood contributing as thinking, rationale beings and (hopefully) not some social misfits.

There's a good one that I've been using lately, especially with the three boys, the older ones, when I think they are going to do something "boneheaded" or just as a general caution: "Don't do anything that would bring disgrace to you mother". That usually at least gets them to thinking for a split second.

I have a LandPride RTA1050 tiller that flat works-out great. It's a Cat 1, 6 tine, slip-clutch, 50 inch width, weighing in at 385 pounds according to the manual. It may be a bit pricey (I paid $1750), but it is amazing in what it goes through. It's a keeper.

denwood -- Toyota does make diesels, and they are great. So far, it appears that they choose to market them in their non-US markets. The absolutely best vehicle that I have ever had was our 2002 Toyota Landcruiser GXL Turbo Diesel in Australia prior to relocating to the US late last year (2004). I really did look into bringing back, having it converted to left-hand drive, and all. It's just that Toyota-US does not support it and I was worried about service in the long-run. There's a picture of it in my pictures, the 3rd one. That particular vehicle replaced a 1998 Toyota Landcruiser GXL with the 6 cyl petrol engine (4500cc) which replaced a 1993 model (80 series, again with a 4500cc petrol engine). The 4200cc turbo diesel was stronger, far quieter and smoother; even my wife noticed the difference. The diesel also got just about twice the range per liter of fuel when compared to the petrol engine. I could push to 800 km on 150 liters of diesel (95 ltr main and 45 ltr sub tanks) on bitumen (pavement) compared to about 500 or so with the petrol. In-town driving was to fill-up every 2 weeks with the diesel when compared to every week with the petrol, and the price of diesel and petrol was essentially the same. Never was there even the hint of a leak; the only "wet looking dust" that I saw was around the oil drain following a service. There was also larger displacement diesels there from Mitsubishi, Hino, Volvo, and others. When outside of the metropolitan areas or even the town there, diesel-engined vehicles seemed to be those that were preferred. In the larger vehicles, those that would be a step up in size from the small "utes" (utility) or pickups, diesel was about the only ones that one saw. All that I can figure out so far is the market here in the US continues the reliance on gas, or petrol, shunning diesel; sort of a tradition. I really wanted another diesel when returning back here late last year, but settled for another gas-engined Toyota since I could not find anything that I really "fell in love with." And I did look at Ford, GM, and a few others. Although this did not address the thread of the forum, it was a parallel thought to it.

Agree with the Stihl choice. I have had a FS-80 for about 6 years now; great machine that always works when I want it to. After having some of the common electric and no-name-mentioned gas models, going with (what I thought was) the best was a logical choice. No regrets with the Stihl choice at all, only recommendations.
